Plus size usually means women's sizes from around UK 18 or US 14 upward, often labelled 1X to 4X; men's ranges call the same idea big sizes. Brands either extend a core range upward or build a plus range on its own fit. Bodies in that range change shape as well as size, so a plus size clothing manufacturer in Bangladesh has to handle grading, fit and fabric use differently from a core size run.
Garments Hub BD sends a plus size enquiry to plants that already sew large sizes in the construction you need, knit, woven or underwear, and asks both quoting factories to price by size band and to say whether they will grade your core block or build a second one. Fit samples are measured at both ends of the plus run before grading is signed off.
Kinds of plus size clothing manufacturing
Extended sizes on a core range
Your existing styles graded upward two or three sizes past the core run. Quick to add and light on pattern work, it fits well only while the body keeps the core shape, rarely far beyond UK 18 or US 14.
A plus range on its own block
A separate block cut on a plus fit model and graded within the plus run. More pattern and sampling work at the start, and the route that fits most bodies from 1X to 4X, with bust, hip and upper arm shaped for them.
Plus size knit basics
T-shirts, tops, leggings and jersey dresses with elastane, from knit plants. Stretch forgives some fit error, but the fabric has to recover at waist, seat and thigh, where larger bodies stretch it furthest.
Plus size wovens
Shirts, trousers, dresses and jackets from woven plants, where no stretch absorbs a fit error. Darts, ease and a fuller hip curve have to be built into the block, not added in grading.
Plus size underwear
Briefs, camisoles and firm control pieces from underwear plants, with wider gussets, deeper waistbands and elastics set to a tension that holds without digging in.
What to send a plus size clothing manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Size system and run
- UK, US or EU sizes, or 1X to 4X, with the full run and the size where plus starts. Plus runs usually start around UK 18 or US 14 and reach UK 30 or US 28 and beyond.
- Block decision
- Whether plus sizes grade from your core block or come from a separate plus block, and the size at which the second block takes over.
- Fit sample size
- Usually a size near the middle of the plus run, such as a 2X, fitted on a live model or plus form, not the smallest plus size.
- Grade rules
- Plus sizes usually grade in larger steps than core sizes, often 5 to 8 cm at bust and hip per size, with less added at the shoulder and more at upper arm and thigh.
- Fabric width
- The cuttable width of each fabric. Wide plus pattern pieces may no longer fit two across a narrow cloth, which lowers marker efficiency and raises fabric use per piece.
- Stretch and recovery
- Elastane content and the recovery you need at waist, seat and thigh. A plus legging or jersey dress is stretched further in wear, so recovery counts for more than on core sizes.
Tests that matter for plus size clothing
- ISO 13936
- Seam slippage in woven fabric, run on plus trousers and dresses. Seams at hip, seat and back open first when a woven garment sits close on a larger body.
- ISO 13938
- Bursting strength of knit fabric. A plus legging or jersey top is stretched hard at seat and thigh, and a bursting result on the bulk fabric shows its margin.
- ISO 12947
- Abrasion by Martindale. Inner thigh rubbing wears through leggings and trousers on larger bodies, so ask for an abrasion result on the fabric used there.
What moves the price of plus size clothing
- Fabric per piece, which rises with each size and climbs fastest at the top of the run.
- Marker efficiency: wide pattern pieces on a narrow fabric leave more waste.
- A second block, with its own pattern work and an extra round of fit sampling.
- Short runs per size at the ends of the size curve, which cost more per piece to cut.
- Wider elastics, deeper waistbands and stronger trims chosen for larger sizes.
Lead time for plus size clothing manufacturing
Plus size samples usually take 7 to 14 days per round, and a new plus block often needs a second or third fit round before grading is signed. Once the PP sample is approved in writing, bulk usually takes 30 to 60 days. Fabric in a wider cuttable width may need ordering from the mill, which adds days, and the quote confirms the dates.
What we check in plus size clothing manufacturing
- Top size in fullThe largest size measured at every point, since grading errors add up and show most at the end of the run.
- Stress seamsSeams at seat, inner thigh, hip and underarm checked for open stitches, slippage and needle damage on sampled pieces.
- Waistband recoveryWaistbands and elastics stretched and released on several sizes, to confirm they recover without rolling or losing grip.
- Size labelsSize labels, hangtags and carton marks checked against the plus size system, since 1X and XL are easily mixed up.
Questions buyers ask about plus size clothing manufacturing
Where should a second block take over from my core block?
Usually at the first size where the body changes shape, often around UK 18 or US 14 in women's wear. Grading a core block past that point misplaces bust, armhole and rise. Many brands grade the core block one or two sizes up for overlap and start the plus block from there.
Which size should the plus fit sample be?
A size near the middle of the plus run, often a 2X or a US 18 to 20, on a fit model whose measurements match your chart. Fitting the smallest plus size and grading up repeats the core range mistake: the top sizes are never seen on a body before bulk.
Should the largest sizes cost more?
Often, yes. Fabric use rises with every size, and at the top of a plus run it can sit well above the base size. Many brands hold one price within a band and step up between bands, so ask for the quote by size band with the fabric use behind it.
Do plus size garments need more stretch?
Not always more elastane, but better recovery. Knits on larger bodies are stretched further at waist, seat and thigh, and a fabric that recovers poorly bags out within weeks. Ask for recovery results on the bulk fabric and approve leggings and jersey dresses after a wear trial.
