We do not have a tannery or a leather goods unit on the bench yet.

This is a category we are building. Send the enquiry anyway and we will find and vet a unit, visit it, and come back inside 5 working days with either a real quote or a straight no. We will not claim a capability we do not have, and we will not take an order we cannot stand on the floor and inspect.

If you already work with a unit here and want us to manage the quality and the shipping, say so in the enquiry. That we can do from day one.

Small leather goods are the least forgiving product in this trade. On a bag a millimetre of wobble in an edge is invisible; on a wallet it is the whole product. The skill is in skiving, edge finish and stitch consistency, and those are the three things to inspect before you talk about price. This page covers the purses and small leather goods we would source, what to specify, and where our bench honestly stands.

We are a sourcing desk in Dhaka. We do not own a factory, and we will be direct: we do not have a tannery or a leather goods unit on the bench. Bangladesh has a large leather sector, we have not vetted a unit in it yet. Read the note below, and read the rest anyway, because the specification does not change with the factory.

If you are buying larger bags rather than small leather goods, the [leather bags](/categories/leather-bag-manufacturer-bangladesh.html) page covers totes, backpacks and holdalls.

Leather purse types we source

Leather Handbag

Structured body, top handle or short straps, usually lined and with feet. The volume item and the one where panel cutting and symmetry show most.

Shoulder Bag

Single adjustable strap, softer body, flap or zip. Strap length range belongs in the spec, not in a reference photograph.

Crossbody Bag

Long adjustable strap, small body, worn across. Sold on hardware and finish, so the plating and the edge paint carry the price.

Clutch

No strap or a detachable chain, a frame or a zip top. A frame clutch is a different operation from a stitched one and a different unit skill.

Leather Wallet

Multiple skived layers, card slots, a note section, sometimes a coin pocket. Skiving is what makes a wallet thin enough to sit in a pocket, and an unskived wallet is the most common failure on a first order.

Cardholder

The smallest item and the purest test of a unit. Four slots, two panels, four edges. If a unit can make a clean cardholder it can make anything on this page.

Coin Purse

Zip or clasp, single compartment, often a lining and a small tab. Cheap to make and a good add on to lift the value of a wallet order.

Tote Purse

Larger open top in a soft hide, minimal structure, folded edges. A bridge between this page and the bags page.

Leather, specified properly

"Genuine leather" means nothing. Ask for:

Type and layer. Full grain keeps the outer surface and is the best of it. Top grain is sanded and corrected. Split and bonded are lower layers and offcuts. Say which you are buying.

Animal and tannage. Cow, buffalo, goat and sheep all behave differently. Goat and sheep are lighter and take a soft finish, which is why they show up on small goods. Chrome tanned is soft and consistent, vegetable tanned is firmer and ages visibly.

Thickness in millimetres. On small leather goods this is the number that matters most: a wallet panel at 1.2 millimetres unskived is a brick, and the same panel skived to 0.6 at the fold is a product.

Finish. Aniline, semi aniline, pigmented, suede, nubuck, patent. Ask for a rub fastness result, because dye transferring onto a light pocket lining is a complaint you will hear.

Ask for a hide sample rather than a swatch card, and agree in writing which natural marks are acceptable. On small goods the cutter can avoid marks, which is exactly why the yield and the price depend on how strict you are. Be strict and pay for it, or be relaxed and say so.

Skiving, edges and stitch

These three are the craft, and they are what to look at on the sample.

Skiving thins the leather at folds and seams. Ask which edges are skived and to what thickness. An unskived fold is bulky and cracks.

Edges are folded and stitched, raw and burnished, or painted. Painted edges are the norm on small goods and they crack if the paint is wrong or the coats too few. Ask how many coats, and flex the sample edge with your fingers before approving it.

Stitch. Thread thickness, stitches per inch, and whether it is machine or saddle stitched. Saddle stitch is a hand operation, visibly different, and priced accordingly. On a cardholder ask for the stitch count per edge and check the corners: corners are where a weak unit gives itself away.

Hardware. Zips by brand and gauge, clasps, chains and the plating. Ask for a salt spray result or accept some spotting after humid transit.

Where our bench stands

Said plainly: we hold knit, woven, sweater, denim and outerwear plants. We hold no tannery and no leather goods unit. Small leather goods need skiving machines, edge painting and a different grade of hand skill from anything on our bench.

What we will do with an enquiry: go into the leather cluster, find the units that make your product at your quality, visit them, take your specification in, and come back inside five working days with a quote from a unit we have stood inside, or a straight no.

Two useful facts. If your buyer requires LWG certification on the tannery, say so at the enquiry, because it narrows the list sharply. And minimums on small leather goods are low, often 100 to 300 pieces, so a trial order is cheaper here than almost anywhere else in this trade.

What to send with your enquiry

  • Product drawing or a sample to copy, with dimensions in millimetres
  • Card slot and compartment count, and the internal layout
  • Leather type, layer, animal, tannage, thickness and finish
  • Which edges are skived and to what thickness
  • Edge finish, stitch type and density
  • Hardware nomination with plating, and zip brand and gauge
  • Whether you require LWG certification on the tannery
  • Quantity per colour, your target price and your ship date

Quality control, which we do regardless of whose unit it is

Inline inspection while the line runs. Final inspection to AQL 2.5 unless your standard differs, with the photo report before the goods move. On small leather goods we check thickness with a gauge at the folds, skiving where the spec calls for it, edge paint after flexing, stitch density and corner consistency, card slot depth and fit with a real card, hardware function and plating, symmetry panel to panel, and rub fastness on a cut sample.
