Polo shirt types we source

Pique Polo Shirt

Cotton pique, 180 to 220 GSM, three button placket, flat knit collar and cuff, side vents. The standard corporate and retail polo, and the one most enquiries mean.

Double Pique Polo Shirt

A heavier, closer pique at 200 to 240 GSM with a denser surface. It holds its shape better and photographs richer, and it costs a little more per piece.

Cotton Polo Shirt

Single jersey rather than pique, 160 to 200 GSM, softer and cooler. Lighter on price and lighter in the hand, so it suits giveaway and event volume.

Performance Polo Shirt

Polyester or poly cotton pique, 150 to 190 GSM, sometimes with elastane. Moisture moving, quicker drying, and the right pick for outdoor staff uniforms and sports clubs.

Long Sleeve Polo Shirt

Any of the knits above with a rib cuff. The cuff should carry elastane or it bags out, which is the same failure as a hoodie cuff.

Womens Polo Shirt

Cut on a separate block with a shaped side seam and a shorter placket, not a small mens polo. If you sell both, budget for two pattern sets and two pre production samples.

Tipped Collar Polo Shirt

Contrast stripe knitted into the collar and cuff edge. The tipping is knitted, not sewn, so it has to be ordered with the collar and cannot be added later.

Embroidered Polo Shirt

Chest or sleeve embroidery on any body above. Give us the stitch count if you have it. On a pique face, a dense logo needs a backing or it pulls the knit.

Collar and placket, where the price sits

The collar is a separate knitted piece and its quality is a separate decision. A flat knit collar with the right yarn count and a resin finish stays flat through the wash. A cheap collar knitted loose and finished light curls at the points, and once it curls the garment is finished. When you sample, wash the sample five times and look at the collar. That single test tells you more about the factory than the price list does.

The placket is the other visible detail. A two piece placket is neater and costs more than a self placket. Interlining inside the placket keeps it flat. Button spacing and button quality show in a photograph, so nominate the button or let us quote two grades.

Side vents, a taped neck, a longer back hem and a spare button in the polybag are all small costs that make the garment read as considered rather than cheap.

Fabric and colour

Pique is described by weight and by whether it is single or double. Cotton pique breathes and creases. Poly cotton holds colour and shape and is easier to launder, which is why uniform programmes usually land there. Mercerised cotton gives a sheen and a smoother surface at a higher price.

Colour is the quiet risk on a polo order. The body, the collar and the cuff are knitted separately and dyed separately, so they have to be matched as a set. Ask for a lab dip on all three pieces together and approve them together under the same light, not one at a time.

Sizing and grading

Send your size chart with the chest, body length from the high point of the shoulder, shoulder width, sleeve length, cuff width and placket length, plus your tolerance. Tell us whether you sell mens, womens or both, because they are different blocks. We measure the pre production sample in the smallest size, the sample size and the largest size, and send you the numbers before bulk cutting.

Quality control

Inline inspection while the line runs. Final inspection to AQL 2.5 unless your standard differs, with the photo report before the goods move. On a polo we check collar flatness on a washed sample, body to collar to cuff shade match, placket width along its length, button pull strength, embroidery registration, and shade continuity between dye lots.

Compliance differs by plant. The factories on our bench hold different combinations of BSCI, Sedex, WRAP and OEKO-TEX. Tell us what your buyer requires and we will only quote plants that already hold it, with the certificate attached to the quote.
