A trench coat has more pieces than almost anything else a knitwear buyer will have ordered: storm flap, gun flap, epaulettes, belt, D rings, sleeve straps, back vent, collar hook. Trench coat types we source

Double Breasted Trench

Ten button front, storm flap, gun flap, epaulettes, belt with D rings, sleeve straps, back vent. The full specification, and the version to quote first so you know what the details cost.

Single Breasted Trench

Cleaner front, fly or exposed buttons, usually keeps the belt and drops the gun flap. Cheaper to make and easier to wear, and the volume version in most ranges.

Short Trench

Hip to mid thigh, same detailing, less cloth. The one that sells in a mild market and the cheapest way to test a trench block.

Hooded Trench

Attached or detachable hood, which changes the collar build. If the hood is detachable, say whether it fastens with a zip, studs or buttons, because all three are different collars.

Belted Trench

The belt is the item most often wrong. Give us the belt width, the buckle type and whether you want keepers and D rings. A trench belt without keepers is lost by the customer inside a month.

Cotton Gabardine Trench

The traditional cloth: tightly woven cotton with a water repellent finish. Crisp, breathable, and it needs the finish reapplied in the care instructions rather than claimed as waterproof.

Womens Trench

A separate block with a shaped waist and a different belt position, not a small mens coat. If you sell both, budget for two pattern sets and two pre production samples.

Lined Trench

Button in or zip in liner in quilted polyester or a wool blend. Quote it with and without, because the liner is often a third of the cost.

Cloth: repellent, not waterproof

Cotton gabardine, poly cotton gabardine, or a coated poly cotton. Specify weight and construction and get a swatch.

The important distinction is between water repellent and waterproof, and getting it wrong is a trading standards problem, not a style one. A repellent finish makes water bead and run off, and it wears out. A waterproof garment needs a coated or laminated cloth and taped seams, which a trench's storm flap and belt loops make expensive and awkward. Almost every trench coat sold is repellent. Say repellent on the hangtag unless you have paid for the taped seams, and we will spell out which one the quote covers.

Ask for the spray rating on the finished cloth and put the reproofing instruction in the care label.

The details, and what each one costs

A trench is priced by part count. These are the lines worth deciding before you ask for a price, because adding them later reprices the whole order:

• Storm flap on the right shoulder, gun flap on the left
• Epaulettes, buttoned or slotted
• Belt width, buckle, keepers and D rings
• Sleeve straps with buckles
• Back vent, single or inverted, and whether it has a button
• Collar hook and throat latch
• Pocket type: slanted, welt or flap, and whether they are through pockets
• Button material and colour, and horn look versus plain

Ask us for the full specification version and then remove what you do not want. It is easier to cut features from a quote than to add them to one.

Sizing and grading

Send your size chart with the chest, waist, hip and sweep, shoulder, sleeve length, back length and collar, plus the tolerance, and say whether the coat is cut to be worn over a jacket. Grade the belt and the epaulette positions with the body or they drift up the chest as the size climbs, which is the most visible grading fault on this garment.

We measure the pre production sample in the smallest size, the sample size and the largest size and send you the numbers before bulk cutting starts.

Quality control

Inline inspection while the line runs. Final inspection to AQL 2.5 unless your standard differs, with the photo report before the goods move. On a trench we check storm and gun flap symmetry, belt length against the largest size, buckle and D ring security, epaulette position against the grade, spray rating on a washed sample so we know the finish survives, button and buttonhole strength, collar hook function, and shade continuity between cloth rolls.

Compliance differs by plant. The factories on our bench hold different combinations of BSCI, Sedex, WRAP and OEKO-TEX. Tell us what your buyer requires and we will only quote plants that already hold it, with the certificate attached to the quote.

• Button nomination and label artwork
• Quantity per colour, your target price and your ship date

Minimum order starts from 300 pieces per colour. Two factory quotes in 48 hours, sample in 7 to 14 days, bulk in 30 to 60 days after the pre production sample is signed, FOB Chattogram. Budget two sample rounds on a first trench rather than one: there are enough parts that the first sample is a conversation, not a decision.
