A boys blazer is a tailored garment sold to a parent, which means it has to look structured on a hanger, survive a school term, and cost a fraction of what a mens jacket costs. The three go together only if the canvas, the lining and the size curve are decided properly. Boys blazer types we source

School Blazer

Poly viscose or wool blend, single breasted, two buttons, notch lapel, breast pocket, badge position agreed. The volume item and the one bought on a fixed school colour.

Formal Blazer

Black or navy, cleaner finish, often satin or grosgrain on the lapel for occasion wear. Sold as a single purchase rather than a programme, so the packing matters more.

Slim Fit Blazer

Closer through the body with a higher armhole and a shorter length. The armhole is where it goes wrong: cut it low to save cloth and the boy cannot lift his arm.

Double Breasted Blazer

Six on two, peak lapel. Needs a better canvas than a single breasted, because the overlap shows any weakness in the front.

Velvet Blazer

Cotton or poly velvet for occasion wear, usually with satin lapels. Velvet has a nap, so every panel has to be cut in the same direction or the colour changes across the garment. Say that in the spec.

Wool Blend Blazer

Wool with polyester for crease recovery and price. Say the blend you will accept, because 30 percent wool and 60 percent wool are different garments.

Linen Blazer

Linen or linen cotton for a warm market. It creases, that is the fibre, and your quality standard has to say so or correct garments will fail inspection.

Blazer and Waistcoat Set

Quoted as a set, graded as two garments, packed together. Agree the pack ratio early because it drives the polybag and carton spec.

Cloth and construction at a childrens price

The cloth is usually poly viscose at 220 to 280 grams per metre, because it holds a pressed edge, survives a hot wash and costs a third of wool. Wool blends go up from there and sell on feel. Specify fibre content, weight and finish, and get a swatch: on a school colour you also need a shade reference, because this year's blazer will sit next to last year's in the same classroom.

Front construction is the decision that decides whether it reads as tailored. Fully fused is normal at this price and is fine if the interlining weight is right and the press is right. Ask for a washed and pressed sample, because a fused front that bubbles after one clean is the most common blazer complaint and it shows up only after a wash.

Lining is usually polyester twill. A full lining is standard; a half lining is cooler and cheaper. Ask for a hanging loop and say whether you want an inside pocket.

Shoulder is set in with a light pad. On childrenswear the pad should be light: a heavy pad on a small frame looks like a costume.

Badges. Say whether the badge is applied by the factory, or a position is left for the school to apply its own, and give the exact placement from the shoulder seam and the armhole. This is the single most common spec gap on school blazers.

Sizing, and the growth problem

Boys blazers are sized by age or by chest, and both are used in different markets. Send the chart you sell in, with chest, waist, back length, shoulder, sleeve length and the age or height band, plus your tolerance.

The thing that reduces returns more than anything else is a growth allowance: a deep hem in the sleeve and a let out seam at the centre back, so a parent can get two terms from one garment. It costs very little and it is worth saying yes to. Tell us if you want it and it is quoted in.

We measure the pre production sample in the smallest band, the sample band and the largest band and send you the numbers before bulk cutting starts.

Safety and compliance

Childrenswear rules apply to a blazer as much as to a hoodie. Cords are not an issue here, but buttons and badges are small parts and are tested for pull strength, and the lining and cloth need the dye and finish certification for the age band in your market. Tell us the market and the band with the enquiry and we will only quote plants that can supply the reports, attached to the quote rather than promised after it.

Compliance differs by plant. The factories on our bench hold different combinations of BSCI, Sedex, WRAP and OEKO-TEX. OEKO-TEX class matters on childrenswear, so tell us the band.

Quality control

Inline inspection while the line runs. Final inspection to AQL 2.5 unless your standard differs, with the photo report before the goods move. On a boys blazer we check lapel roll and symmetry, interlining against the spec and after a press, badge position against the drawing, button and badge pull strength on every sampled garment, lining ease so it does not pull the shell, sleeve head smoothness, nap direction on velvet, and shade against the approved reference on every school colour.
