We do not have a tannery or a leather goods unit on the bench yet.

This is a category we are building. Send the enquiry anyway and we will find and vet a unit, visit it, and come back inside 5 working days with either a real quote or a straight no. We will not claim a capability we do not have, and we will not take an order we cannot stand on the floor and inspect.

If you already work with a unit here and want us to manage the quality and the shipping, say so in the enquiry. That we can do from day one.

A leather bag is priced by hide area and judged by edges. The leather is most of the cost, the cutting yield decides how much of it you pay for, and the edge finish is the first thing a buyer runs a thumb along. This page covers the leather bags we would source, what to specify, and where our bench honestly stands.

We are a sourcing desk in Dhaka. We do not own a factory, and leather is the category where we will be most direct with you: we do not have a tannery or a leather goods unit on the bench. Bangladesh has a large leather sector, we have not yet vetted a unit in it. Read the note below, and read the rest of the page anyway, because the specification is the same whoever cuts it.

Leather bag types we source

Leather Tote Bag

Open top or zipped, two handles, flat base or a gusseted one. The volume shape and the one that shows cutting quality most plainly, because the panels are large and a flaw cannot be hidden.

Leather Backpack

Two straps, a flap or a zip top, usually a padded back panel. The strap anchor is the part that fails, so it needs a reinforcement patch and a bar tack or a rivet behind it.

Laptop Bag

Padded sleeve inside, structured body, often a trolley sleeve at the back. Give us the device dimensions rather than a model name, because models change and millimetres do not.

Duffle Bag

Barrel body, zip top, end panels, a shoulder strap and grab handles. The zip length and brand belong in the spec: this is the item where a cheap zip ruins an expensive bag.

Messenger Bag

Single cross body strap, flap closure, usually a buckle or a magnetic snap under it. Strap adjustment range is a real measurement and should be in the spec.

Travel Bag

Larger duffle or holdall with a base reinforcement and feet. Base studs stop the bottom wearing through and cost very little.

Waist Bag

Small body on a webbing or leather waist strap. Sold on hardware and finish rather than capacity.

Leather Shopper

Unstructured tote in a softer hide, minimal lining, raw or folded edges. A cheaper make in an expensive leather, which is a deliberate and sellable combination.

Leather, specified properly

A leather specification that just says "genuine leather" will get you anything. Ask for these:

Type and layer. Full grain is the outer surface with the grain intact and it is the best of it. Top grain is sanded and corrected. Split and bonded leather are lower layers and offcuts, and bonded leather is not leather in any useful sense. Say which.

Animal and tannage. Cow, buffalo and goat all behave differently. Chrome tanned is soft and consistent, vegetable tanned is firmer and ages visibly. They are different products, not different grades.

Thickness, in millimetres or ounces. A tote at 1.4 to 1.6 millimetres, a belt at 3 to 4, a soft shopper at 1.0 to 1.2. Thickness changes the whole character and is routinely left out.

Finish. Aniline, semi aniline, pigmented, suede, nubuck, patent. Pigmented is the most consistent and the least characterful. Ask for a rub fastness result, because the dye coming off onto a light shirt is the complaint you will hear about.

Ask for a hide sample, not a swatch card. Leather varies across a hide and a small square tells you nothing about the natural marks you will have to accept in bulk. Agree what marks are acceptable in writing before bulk cutting, or the inspection has no standard.

Lining, edges and hardware

Lining. Cotton twill, polyester, suede or unlined. Say whether the lining is stitched in or glued, and ask for stitched on anything that has to last.

Edges. Folded and stitched, raw and burnished, or painted. Painted edges look clean and crack if the paint is wrong or the coats are too few. Ask how many coats and ask to see an edge on the sample after flexing it.

Hardware. Zips by brand and gauge, buckles, D rings, rivets, feet and the plating. Plating is where bags fail in humid transit: ask for a salt spray result on the hardware or accept that some will spot.

Stitching. Thread thickness, stitches per inch, and saddle stitch versus machine stitch. Saddle stitching is a hand operation and a different price entirely.

Where our bench stands

Stated plainly, because a page that implied otherwise would earn an enquiry we would have to duck: we hold knit, woven, sweater, denim and outerwear plants. We hold no tannery and no leather goods unit. Leather is cut, skived, edged and stitched on machines none of our plants owns.

What we will do with a leather enquiry: go into the leather cluster, find the units that make your product at your quality, visit them, take your specification in, and come back inside five working days with a quote from a unit we have stood inside, or a straight no. We would rather lose the enquiry than take an order we cannot inspect.

Two things worth knowing if you are new to sourcing leather here. Compliance in the leather sector is a real question and the answer differs sharply between units, so if your buyer requires LWG certification on the tannery, say it at the enquiry, because it narrows the list to a handful. And leather goods minimums are usually much lower than garment minimums, often 100 to 300 pieces, which makes a first trial order cheaper than most buyers expect.

What to send with your enquiry

  • Product drawing or a sample bag to copy, with dimensions in millimetres
  • Leather type, layer, animal, tannage, thickness and finish
  • Whether you require LWG certification on the tannery
  • Lining spec, and whether it is stitched or glued
  • Edge finish, and stitch type and density
  • Hardware nomination with plating, and the zip brand and gauge
  • Quantity per colour, your target price and your ship date

Quality control, which we do regardless of whose unit it is

Inline inspection while the line runs. Final inspection to AQL 2.5 unless your standard differs, with the photo report before the goods move. On a leather bag we check hide grade and natural marks against the standard agreed in writing, thickness with a gauge, edge finish after flexing, stitch density and thread tension, hardware function and plating, strap anchor pull strength, lining attachment, and rub fastness on a cut sample.
