A denim dress is a denim garment made on a dress block, and most of the problems come from treating it as one or the other rather than both. The wash behaves like denim. The fit behaves like a dress, which means the bust, waist and length all have to grade together. Denim dress types we source

Denim Shirt Dress

Collar, button through front, cuffed sleeve, usually belted. The volume shape and the one that sells across the widest age range.

Denim Pinafore Dress

Sleeveless, worn over a top, often with adjustable straps and a bib front. A different block from a shirt dress and a separate pattern set.

Denim Midi Dress

Below the knee, straight or A line, usually in a lighter denim so it moves. Length from the high point of the shoulder belongs in the spec, because midi is not a measurement.

Denim Mini Dress

Above the knee, often in a firmer denim so it holds shape. Watch the ride up: a stiff mini in a rigid denim is uncomfortable and gets returned.

Button Front Denim Dress

Buttons from neck to hem, which means the button spacing has to be graded or the gaps change with size. Ask for a snap or a hidden stay at the bust.

Belted Denim Dress

Self fabric or contrast belt with keepers. Give us the belt width and say whether keepers are included, because a belt without keepers is lost.

Sleeveless Denim Dress

Bound or faced armhole. The binding tension is what decides whether it gapes, so ask for a fitted sample on a form, not just flat measurements.

Kids Denim Dress

The same shapes scaled, with the childrenswear rules applied. State the market and the age band so cords, studs and small parts are specified rather than discovered.

Cloth: lighter than you think

A dress needs denim that drapes, which usually means 6 to 10 ounces, not the 12 to 14 that a jean takes. Above 11 ounces a dress stands away from the body and looks stiff in a photograph.

Specify by weight, construction and stretch content. One to two percent elastane adds comfort without changing the character. Chambray and tencel denim blends are lighter and softer again and are worth quoting alongside if the shape is fluid.

Send a swatch. Denim is a cloth where a written description gets you close and only a swatch gets you right.

The wash, and the shade band

The laundry decides the colour and the hand, exactly as it does on jeans. Rinse, enzyme, stone, bleach and ice washes are all available, and hand or laser applied wear can be added.

Two rules that save orders:

Approve the wash on a full garment, never on a swatch. A wash behaves differently over a seam, a placket and a hem, and a dress has more of all three than a jean does.

Agree a shade band, not a shade. A wash has natural variation. Approve a light limit and a dark limit and inspect against those. A buyer who approves one exact shade will reject half of a correct shipment.

If your range includes jeans or a jacket in the same wash, say so at the enquiry and we will have the laundry run them together. Matching after the fact is expensive and rarely exact.

Sizing and grading

Send your size chart with the bust, underbust if the shape is fitted, waist, hip, shoulder, sleeve length, armhole depth and the full length from the high point of the shoulder, plus your tolerance. Say which market sizing you sell in, because UK, EU and US charts do not line up.

Denim shrinks in the wash, so the chart has to be post wash measurements and the pattern cut to the shrinkage. Ask the plant to confirm the shrinkage percentage it is cutting to, and we measure the pre production sample in the smallest size, the sample size and the largest size after washing before bulk cutting starts.

Quality control

Inline inspection while the line runs. Final inspection to AQL 2.5 unless your standard differs, with the photo report before the goods move. On a denim dress we check the wash against the agreed shade band under a controlled light, post wash measurements against the chart, button spacing and bust gape on a fitted sample, armhole binding tension, bar tacks at every stress point, rivet and stud security where used, and crocking, which is the dye rubbing off onto a light sofa and the complaint nobody plans for.

Compliance differs by plant, and the laundry has its own water and chemical footprint. The factories on our bench hold different combinations of BSCI, Sedex, WRAP, OEKO-TEX and GRS. Tell us what your buyer requires and we will only quote plants and laundries that already hold it, with the certificate attached to the quote.
