Baby clothing, your specification

Made to your tech pack, fabric and colours by a factory matched to the order.

Private label

Your main label, care label, hangtag and polybag. Nominated trims accepted.

Baby clothing covers newborn to 24 months, and it is a different product from kids wear. The garments go on and off a baby lying down, so necks open wide and crotches snap; the fabric sits on new skin all day; and the cord rules and the tests buyers ask for on snaps, dyes and sleepwear are stricter than for older children. A baby clothing manufacturer in Bangladesh needs knit plants that already run this age band.

Garments Hub BD sends the enquiry to two knit plants on its bench that make baby wear, matched to the certificates the buyer's market needs, and test reports named on the quote form are built into the timeline. Snaps, prints and labels are fixed before sampling, because changing a snap after a laboratory test means testing again.

Kinds of baby clothing

Bodysuits

Short or long sleeve, with an envelope neck and three crotch snaps, in cotton interlock or rib. The basic layer of every baby range, and usually sold in multipacks.

Rompers

One piece outfits with short or long legs, snapped at the crotch and sometimes the shoulder, in knit or light woven cloth. Choose them for day wear in warmer months.

Sleepsuits

Full length and often footed, opened by snaps or a zip from neck to ankle. Choose a zip with a zip garage at the chin, or snaps placed so nothing presses on the spine.

Bibs

Terry or jersey fronts with a waterproof or terry back, closed by a snap or hook and loop tape. Choose snaps over ties, which can catch and loop round a neck.

Gift sets

Two to four coordinated pieces, such as a bodysuit, leggings and a bib, packed in a box or on a hanger. Choose them for retail gifting, priced and packed as one unit.

How to specify baby clothing

Fabric
Combed cotton interlock or 1x1 rib, usually 160 to 220 GSM, or organic cotton if the range carries a GOTS claim. No scratchy yarns or rough print backs inside.
Necks and openings
Envelope shoulders or neck snaps, with the neck stretch measured, so the garment passes over a baby's head without force.
Snaps
Number, position and type, ring or prong, metal or plastic. Metal snaps must be nickel free, and every snap type needs a pull test agreed with the laboratory.
Size by age and length
Sizes by age band and by length, for example EU 50, 56, 62, 68, 74, 80 and 86, which are body length in centimetres.
Labels and prints
Printed or very soft labels kept away from the neck, and soft prints with no loose glitter or appliqué edges that could peel.
Gift packing
Folded on card, on a hanger or in a box, with no pins, loose clips or small parts anywhere in the pack.

Rules a baby clothing manufacturer in Bangladesh must meet

OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100
Product class I covers baby articles up to 36 months and is the strictest of the four classes. Ask for a class I certificate covering fabric, thread, snaps and prints.
EU REACH Annex XVII
Entry 27 limits nickel release from snaps in prolonged skin contact to 0.5 micrograms per square centimetre per week; entry 72 limits formaldehyde in clothing to 75 mg/kg.
US CPSIA
Total lead at most 100 ppm in accessible parts and 90 ppm in coatings, so snaps and prints are tested at a CPSC accepted laboratory, with a tracking label and a Children's Product Certificate.
16 CFR 1615
US flammability standard for children's sleepwear, sizes 0 to 6X. Infant garments sized nine months or smaller and within its length limits, and tight fitting sleepwear meeting its measurements, fall outside it.
EN 14682
The EU standard for cords and drawstrings on children's clothing. For babies the safe choice is no cords at all, with snaps and hook and loop tape in place of ties.

What moves the price of baby clothing

  • Each snap is a bought part plus a setting operation, so snap count moves the price.
  • GOTS organic cotton costs more and needs certified processing at every stage.
  • Third party tests for each style and colour add laboratory charges.
  • Footed sleepsuits with zips cost more to make than simple bodysuits.
  • Gift boxes, cards and hangers add packaging cost per unit.

Lead time for baby clothing

Baby wear samples in the usual 7 to 14 days, but third party tests on snaps, prints and fabric are run on bulk materials, so they have to be planned before shipment. GOTS orders also need certified fabric and a transaction certificate. Bulk for a baby range typically runs 30 to 60 days after PP approval, with the laboratory dates inside that window. Name every test on the quote form so both factories date it in their quotes.

What we check on baby clothing before shipment

  • Snap attachmentSnaps on sampled garments pulled and twisted by hand, and checked for spacing, alignment and clean closing.
  • Neck openingNeck stretch measured on envelope necks and snapped shoulders, so the garment passes over a head without force.
  • Loose threads inside feetFooted sleepsuits and fold over scratch mitts checked inside for thread loops and long ends that could wrap a toe or finger.
  • Broken needle controlThe factory's broken needle records and metal detector log checked for the order, since a needle tip in a bodysuit means a recall.

Questions buyers ask about baby clothing

What sizes should baby clothing come in?

Most ranges size by age band, such as 0 to 3, 3 to 6, 6 to 12 and 12 to 24 months, and many markets add length in centimetres. EU sizes such as 56, 62 and 68 are body length in centimetres. Print both on the label, because babies of one age vary widely in length.

Are metal snaps allowed on baby clothes?

Yes, if they are nickel free and meet the release limit under EU REACH Annex XVII entry 27, and for the US are tested for lead under CPSIA. Plastic snaps avoid the nickel question but must still pass pull tests. Fix the snap type before sampling, because changing it later means retesting.

Do baby sleepsuits need a flammability test for the US?

It depends on size and fit. 16 CFR 1615 covers children's sleepwear up to size 6X, but infant garments sized nine months or smaller, within the rule's length limits, and tight fitting sleepwear that meets its measurements and carries its label, fall outside it. Loose sleepwear for older babies must pass the test. Confirm each style with the laboratory.

Can baby clothing be made from GOTS certified organic cotton?

Yes. The fabric and every processing stage need GOTS certification, and the label grade depends on content: organic needs at least 95 percent certified organic fibre, made with organic at least 70 percent. Name GOTS on the enquiry so only plants holding it are matched.
