A retail bath towel is judged twice: in the hand on the shelf, and at home after the first wash. Weight, loop and drying time decide both. Department stores, home brands and online sellers use a bath towel manufacturer in Bangladesh for cotton terry sold singly or in sets with matching hand towels and face cloths, from the standard size up to the bath sheet.
Garments Hub BD sends your bath towel spec to factories on its bench and asks each one to state the pile yarn, the ground yarn and the finished GSM behind its price, so the offers compare like for like. The factories are matched to the certificates your retailer asks for, and the greige terry, the dyed lot and the packed cartons are photographed for you.
Kinds of bath towel
Ring spun cotton terry
Pile yarn spun on a ring frame is stronger and sheds less than open end yarn. It gives a firm, dense loop that keeps its shape through years of home washing, and it suits the core of a retail range.
Zero twist terry
The pile yarn is spun with a soluble filament that is washed out in finishing, leaving untwisted cotton. The towel feels lofty and soft and absorbs quickly, but expect more lint in the first washes and a higher price.
Dobby border bath towels
A flat woven band near each end, plain or with a satin or geometric pattern, frames the towel and gives a range its look. The band carries no pile, so a wide border lowers the weight per piece.
Bath sheets
The larger size, usually around 90 by 160 or 100 by 150 centimetres, woven in the same quality as the bath towel so a set matches. Weight, yarn cost and carton count all rise with area.
How to brief a bath towel manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Pile yarn and twist
- Name ring spun, combed, low twist or zero twist, and the count, usually in the 10s to 20s Ne range for pile. The pile yarn decides softness, lint and most of the yarn cost.
- Weight in GSM
- State the finished GSM after washing and drying, with a tolerance, usually plus or minus 5 percent. Heavier towels dry more slowly.
- Finished size
- Give the finished size for each market, not the loom size, since terry loses some length and width in finishing.
- Border and hem
- Specify border width and pattern, hem depth and stitch, and whether the sides are woven selvedges or sewn side hems. A loose side hem is often the first fault a customer sees.
- Softener and absorbency
- Ask for a hydrophilic softener rather than a plain silicone finish, which can make a new towel repel water at first, and agree a water drop absorbency test on the finished towel.
- Shade and dye lot
- Approve a lab dip per colour and ask that each colour ships from as few dye lots as possible, marked on the cartons, so stores do not shelve two shades side by side.
Tests and certificates for bath towels
- ISO 3801
- Confirms the mass per unit area of the woven terry, the figure behind the GSM on your swing tag. Ask for it on the dyed, finished towel, not on the greige cloth.
- ISO 5077 with ISO 6330
- Measures length and width change after home washing. Shrinkage on terry can differ between the two directions, so state a limit for each rather than one figure.
- OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100
- Tests the finished towel for harmful substances. Terry cloth falls in product class II, for articles in direct contact with skin, so the certificate should cover class II or the stricter class I.
What moves the price of a bath towel
- Pile yarn: zero twist and combed ring spun yarn cost more than carded or open end yarn of the same count.
- Finished GSM, because cotton yarn is most of the cost and a heavier towel uses more of it per piece.
- Border design: a jacquard or satin border needs more loom set up than a plain dobby band.
- Colour count: many shades in small quantities raise the dyeing cost per kilogram of terry.
- Retail packing: printed belly bands, ribbons and set boxes add cost over plain folded cartons.
Lead time for bath towels
A bath towel sample in an existing terry quality usually takes 7 to 14 days; a new dobby border or a custom shade sits at the long end. Bulk bath towel production usually runs 30 to 60 days after the pre-production sample is approved. Yarn dyed borders, organic yarn that must be sourced against a certificate, and a third party laboratory test each add days, and the quote confirms the dates.
What we check on bath towels before shipment
- GSM on a cut swatchA swatch is cut from a finished towel and weighed, because a towel can pass by eye and still be light.
- Pulled loops and pile gapsThe face is scanned under light for snagged loops and bare lines from a broken pile end, which customers notice at once.
- Border and hem lineThe border must sit square to the edge and the hem lie flat, with no wavy ends after folding.
- Absorbency on arrivalA few towels from the packed lot get a water drop check, to catch a silicone finish before the goods ship.
Questions buyers ask about bath towels
What GSM should a retail bath towel be?
Mid-market bath towels usually sit around 500 to 600 GSM, inside a typical retail range of 450 to 700. Lighter towels feel thin in the hand; heavier ones feel plush but take longer to dry and cost more to ship. Choose by price point and climate.
Is zero twist better than ring spun for a bath towel?
Neither wins in every case. Zero twist feels softer and loftier and absorbs fast, but it sheds more lint at first and can lose loft sooner under hard washing. Ring spun is firmer, sheds less and holds up longer, which suits a towel sold on durability.
Why do new bath towels shed lint?
Loose fibre from the pile and from cutting stays in the loops until the first few washes carry it away. Combed yarn and ring spinning reduce it, and a thorough wash in finishing removes much of it before packing. Judge lint on a dark shade.
Do bath towel sizes differ between the UK, the EU and the US?
Yes. UK ranges often use a bath towel around 70 by 125 to 130 centimetres, mainland European ranges 70 by 140, and US ranges work in inches, usually 27 by 52 or 30 by 56. Fix the sizes per market at the proto stage so the border is drawn for the finished size.
