How to specify a casual shirt range
- Casual block
- Relaxed body, natural or dropped shoulder, straight hem with side vents or a short curved tail, and one chest pocket. Agree it as a block separate from any formal shirt.
- Collar and interlining
- Button down, camp, band or classic collar, usually with soft or no fused interlining so the collar rolls rather than standing stiff.
- Garment wash and finish
- Rinse, enzyme, softener or pigment dye after sewing, stated per style. Washes change size and shade, so measure and approve after the wash.
- Buttons
- Matte, horn effect, corozo or four hole buttons in place of glossy shirting buttons, with contrast thread on the holes where it suits the look.
- Labels and details
- Printed neck labels, a hem flag label, a woven patch or locker loop, and a pocket shape that suits the fabric.
- Check and stripe matching
- For flannel and stripes, which points must match: pocket, placket, yoke or sleeve placket. Each matched point costs cloth and cutting time.

- Tear strength of woven fabric. Enzyme and stone washes weaken cotton, so ask for tear results on washed cloth, not greige, for any garment washed shirt.
- ISO 105-X12
- Colour fastness to rubbing. Indigo denim and dark flannel shirts can mark a light collar or a car seat, so ask for dry and wet grades after the wash.
- ISO 5077
- Shrinkage after the garment wash and again after home laundering, run through ISO 6330 cycles. A casual shirt is measured after washing, so both numbers matter.
