- Denim weight and weave
- Weight in ounces after washing, usually 4 to 8 oz for this shape, and whether twill or chambray. Collars and cuffs in heavier denim turn bulky and stand away from the neck.
- Collar, stand and interlining
- Collar point length, stand height and the interlining, fusible or sewn in. A fused collar ripples after the garment wash when interlining and shell shrink at different rates.
- Sleeve length grade
- Sleeve measured from centre back neck to cuff edge, with its own grade. On women's charts it usually grows 0.5 to 1 cm a size while the bust grows 4 to 5 cm.
- Body length and extra lengths
- Full length from the high point of the shoulder for every size, plus petite or tall if wanted. Each extra length is a new grade, since waist, pocket and hem positions move.
- Cuff and placket
- Barrel cuff with one or two buttons, or a roll tab; a front placket usually 3 to 3.5 cm wide, cut as a separate strip or folded from the front edge.
- Wash and hand
- The wash and a reference garment. Shirt dresses usually take an enzyme or rinse wash that softens collar and cuffs; a heavy stone wash roughens the folded edges.

- Colour fastness to rubbing on the washed dress. Dark indigo transfers to pale bags and car seats; ask for dry and wet grades on the 1 to 5 grey scale.
- ISO 5077 with ISO 6330
- Dimensional change in washing. Three percent shrinkage takes more than 3 cm off a dress body and nearly 2 cm off a long sleeve, so ask for results by direction.
- ISO 13936
- Seam slippage. Light denim and chambray can open at side and armhole seams under strain; this test shows whether the yarns slide apart beside the stitching.
- OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100
- Harmful substance testing on fabric, thread, interlining and buttons. Ask which items the certificate covers, and in which product class.

Questions buyers ask about denim shirt dresses
Can one denim shirt dress style run from size 6 to 22 in a single order?
Yes. The 300 piece minimum counts every size of one colour together, so a wide size run sits inside it. Very thin quantities in the end sizes can raise the unit price, because they are cut in short lays. Send the size ratio with the enquiry so both quotes price the same split.
Chambray or light twill denim for a shirt dress?
Chambray for a cooler, softer summer dress with an even blue. Light twill at around 6 to 8 oz for an all season style with the diagonal denim line and more body at collar and cuffs. Chambray shows fewer wash effects, so heavy distressing suits twill.
Will the collar stay flat after customers wash the dress?
It should, if the interlining is matched to the shrinkage of the denim. Ask the factory to fuse a test collar, wash it with the fabric and show you the result before bulk cutting. Ripples show on that panel long before they show in a customer review.
Can the same pattern give a regular and a longer length?
Not by lowering the hem alone. A longer length moves the hip line, pocket positions and hem sweep, so it is graded as a second length with its own marker and a fit check, especially when the dress is belted.
