Kinds of denim tote bag
Flat tote
Two panels sewn at the sides and base, with no gusset. The lightest and cheapest tote, and the easiest to screen print because the panel lies flat. Holds papers, a book and light shopping.
Gusseted tote
A strip running down both sides and across the base, typically 80 to 150 mm wide, so the bag holds a box or a laptop. More denim and two extra seams than a flat tote.
Boxed base tote
Corners boxed and a stiffener laid in the base so the bag stands on a shelf. The retail display tote, often lined and finished with a short handle for carrying by hand.
Lined tote with inside pocket
A cotton drill or polyester lining with a slip or zip pocket. Hides the seam allowances and the indigo inside the bag, and suits a fashion price point rather than a giveaway.

How to specify a denim tote bag
- Finished size
- Width, height and gusset or base depth in millimetres, plus handle length and the drop from the top edge to the top of the handle.
- Denim weight and wash
- The weight, typically 10 to 14 oz for a tote, and whether it ships raw, rinsed or washed. A rinse cuts the indigo that rubs onto clothes.
- Handles
- Self fabric folded and stitched, cotton webbing or PU, with width and length, and whether they sit inside the top band or are stitched outside with a box and cross.
- Top edge and closure
- Folded hem, facing or binding, then open top, magnetic snap or zip. A zip top adds a sub-assembly and cost.
- Lining and pocket
- Unlined with bound or overlocked seams, or lined in drill or polyester, with the pocket size and its position.
- Decoration
- Screen print, embroidery or a patch, with vector artwork and the position in millimetres from the top edge. A pale ink on dark indigo usually needs a white underbase.

Can I print my logo on a denim tote?
Yes. Screen printing suits one to four flat colours; embroidery suits small logos and reads well on heavy denim. On dark indigo, a light ink needs an underbase, and a strike-off on the actual denim is worth doing before bulk.
Can I order totes in more than one denim shade?
Yes, with the minimum met per shade. A light, mid and dark wash set is common. Each shade is a separate laundry lot, so expect small differences between lots and agree a shade band with the plant before bulk cutting starts.
