A flannel shirt is a woven cotton shirt whose cloth is brushed after weaving to raise a soft nap. Most are yarn dyed checks, so the pattern runs through the yarn. Casual menswear, outdoor and workwear labels buy it for autumn. Choosing a flannel shirt manufacturer in Bangladesh is mostly a question of cutting: the check has to meet at the pocket, placket and yoke, and that decides cloth use and price.

Garments Hub BD is the sourcing desk; the flannel is cut and sewn by factories on its bench. Send the check artwork or a swatch, your matching rule and a hand feel reference, and both factories price the same consumption. On a custom check the lab dip step becomes approval of each yarn colour. Matching on cut panels is photographed at inline inspection.

Kinds of flannel shirt

Single brushed check flannel

Yarn dyed check brushed on the face only, usually 160 to 180 GSM. The inside stays smoother, pilling is lower and the check lines stay crisp.

Double brushed flannel

Brushed on both faces for a softer, warmer hand. It sheds more fibre in the first washes, pills more readily and relaxes more in length, so it needs a pilling test and a larger shrinkage allowance.

Heavy workwear flannel

Coarser yarns in a denser cloth, usually 200 to 270 GSM, often with two flap pockets and a longer back hem. Worn as an outer layer in outdoor and trade ranges.

Cotton polyester flannel

A blend that shrinks less and costs less than all cotton. Polyester fibres anchor pills to the surface instead of letting them shed, so set a pilling grade before approving the cloth.

Melange and solid flannel

Brushed cloth in one colour or a heathered yarn, with no check to match. Cutting is faster and waste drops, which makes it the cheapest flannel in most ranges.

How to specify a flannel shirt

Check repeat and matching rule
Give the repeat size in centimetres and list the points that must match: pocket to front, the two sides of the placket, yoke to back, sleeve placket. Add a tolerance in millimetres.
Brushing and hand
State one face or both faces brushed and send a hand feel reference. Brushing lifts and softens the colour slightly, so approve shade on brushed cloth, not on unbrushed fabric.
Weight and yarn count
Ask for finished GSM after brushing. Flannel shirting usually carries a coarse, soft twist weft, often 10s to 20s, because that is the yarn the brushing raises; the warp can be finer.
Shrinkage target
State the limit after washing, usually about 3 percent in length and width, and ask for a compressive shrinking finish on the cloth. Brushed cotton relaxes more than a smooth shirting.
Bias cut details
A pocket or yoke cut on the bias needs no matching and reads as a design detail. Mark it on the tech pack, because it changes the marker and the consumption.

Tests to ask of a flannel shirt manufacturer in Bangladesh

ISO 12945-2
Pilling by the modified Martindale method. A brushed face is loose fibre by design, so ask for the grade after the lab's rub count; grade 3 or above is a common target.
ISO 105-C06
Fastness of the check colours to washing, read on the grey scales from 1 to 5. The risk is a red or navy yarn staining a white or cream ground, so read staining as well as change.
ISO 5077 with ISO 6330
Dimensional change after home laundering. Test the brushed fabric before cutting and a finished shirt at the PP stage, since the nap and the seams each move the result.

What moves the price of a flannel shirt

  • Full matching at pocket, placket, yoke and sleeve, which adds cloth to every marker and slows the cutting room.
  • The size of the check repeat: a large repeat leaves more fabric unused between matched panels.
  • A check woven to your design, which carries a mill fabric minimum, against a check from the mill's stock range.
  • The number of yarn colours in the check, and whether the cloth is brushed on one face or two.
  • Weight and fibre: heavy all cotton workwear flannel costs more per metre than a cotton polyester blend.

Lead time for flannel shirts

Samples on a stock check usually take 7 to 14 days. Bulk flannel usually takes 30 to 60 days after you approve the PP sample in writing. A check designed for you adds yarn dyeing, weaving and brushing before any cutting, and the extra days depend on the mill's loom schedule. A shrinkage test on brushed cloth adds a few more, and the quote confirms each date.

What we check on flannel shirts before shipment

  • Check matchingPocket, placket, yoke and sleeve placket are measured against the millimetre tolerance on every sampled shirt, since a mismatch cannot be corrected after cutting.
  • Bow and skewThe cloth is laid flat to see whether check lines run straight across the body. Bowed or skewed cloth makes a matched shirt look crooked.
  • Nap directionAll panels are cut with the nap running one way. A panel cut against the nap reads as a different shade under shop lighting.
  • Washed shirtA washed shirt is measured against the size chart and looked at for pilling and for dye staining on the light ground.

Questions buyers ask about flannel shirts

Do I need the check matched everywhere on a flannel shirt?

No. Many casual ranges match the pocket to the front and the two sides of the placket, and let the sleeve run free. Full matching at the yoke and sleeve head costs more cloth and cutting time. A bias cut pocket or yoke removes the matching on that part altogether.

How much will a brushed flannel shirt shrink?

Brushed cotton relaxes more than smooth shirting, and double brushed cloth more again. Buyers usually set about 3 percent in length and width as the limit. Ask for a compressive shrinking finish on the cloth and an ISO 5077 result on the washed shirt before bulk is cut.

Can I have my own check designed?

Yes. Send the artwork with yarn colours and repeat size, and the mill weaves a short hand loom sample for approval. A custom check carries the mill's own fabric minimum, which can exceed the cloth a small shirt order uses, so the quote shows both figures.

Does each colourway of a check count as a separate colour for the minimum?

Usually yes. A red check and a green check of the same design are two colours, each with its own minimum, because each needs its own set of dyed yarns on the loom. Both factories' minimums per colourway come back on the quote sheet.
