A flat sheet is one rectangle of sheeting, hemmed on four sides, with a deeper hem at the head that folds back over the duvet. It also sets the cloth cost for a bed linen range, since the other pieces are priced from the same metre. A flat sheet manufacturer in Bangladesh usually cuts from cloth woven about 240 to 320 cm wide, so most sizes need no join. Buyers are retailers, online bedding brands and hotels.
The desk looks for a unit that holds wide sheeting in your construction, or buys it from a mill it can name, and visits to see hemming lines that handle panels close to three metres long. Your size chart goes in as finished sizes after washing, and the fit sample is measured against it.
Kinds of flat sheet
Percale flat sheets
A plain one over one weave, usually 200 to 300 thread count in combed cotton. Matt, crisp and cool, it creases more than sateen. Choose it for classic retail ranges and warm climates.
Sateen flat sheets
A warp faced weave, usually four over one, at 300 to 600 thread count, with a soft lustre on the face. Choose it for a smooth, draping sheet; it snags and pills sooner than percale.
Polycotton flat sheets
Polyester and cotton, usually 50/50 or 65/35 polyester to cotton, at 144 to 200 thread count. Dries fast, creases less, costs less per metre. Choose it for value retail, student rooms and rental lets.
Brushed cotton flat sheets
Sold as flannelette in some markets: cotton raised on the face for a warm hand, usually 140 to 190 GSM. Choose it for winter ranges, with a pilling test, because raised fibre sheds.
Flat sheets with a decorative head hem
Hemstitch, a satin band, a piped cord or embroidery across the head hem, each its own operation with its own sewing time. Choose it where the sheet is shown folded over the duvet.
How to brief a flat sheet manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Mattress and market
- Give the mattress each size is for: a UK double is 135 by 190 cm, an EU double usually 140 or 160 by 200 cm, a US queen 60 by 80 inches.
- Tuck allowance
- Sheet width is mattress width, plus twice its depth, plus a tuck each side. State the tuck in centimetres and the finished size after washing, not the cut size.
- Hem widths
- The head hem is usually 5 to 10 cm, the foot and side hems usually 1 to 2.5 cm. Say whether the sides are hemmed or left as selvedge.
- Thread count with yarn count
- Thread count is warp plus weft per square inch; yarn count, such as 40s or 60s, is fineness. Give both, with single or two ply.
- Weave
- Name percale or sateen, and the float for sateen. They are two cloths with different hands, not two grades of one.
- Fibre and finish
- Combed or carded cotton, long staple if the range sells on feel, the polyester share in a blend, and any finish: mercerised, peached or easy care resin.
Tests and certificates for flat sheets
- ISO 5077 with ISO 6330
- Size change after laundering. Ask for it on the finished sheet as well as the cloth: a 4 percent loss on a 270 cm sheet takes about 11 cm off the tuck.
- ISO 3801
- Cloth weight in grams per square metre on woven sheeting. Put the GSM in the contract; a cloth lighter than the approved sample at the same count means finer yarn was used.
- ISO 12945-2
- Pilling on the modified Martindale. Ask for it on sateen, brushed cotton and polycotton, where loose surface fibre balls up under the moving body.
What moves the price of a flat sheet
- Cloth per metre: fibre, yarn count, ply and weave make up the bulk of a flat sheet's cost.
- Width: a size wider than the unit's sheeting forces a join or a wider cloth, and both cost more.
- Cutting yield: how your size set nests across the sheeting width decides the waste per sheet.
- Head hem: hemstitch, a satin band or a cord adds machine time and trim over a plain turned hem.
- Finish: mercerising, peaching or an easy care resin each add a process and a test.
Lead time for flat sheets
A flat sheet sample usually takes 10 to 14 days when the unit holds the sheeting, and bulk usually 45 to 60 days from PP approval. Cloth woven to your construction adds its weaving time before cutting, a dyed shade adds lab dips, and a hemstitch or embroidered head hem adds days on a separate line. The quote carries the dates the unit commits to.
What we check on flat sheets before shipment
- Washed finished sizeSheets from packed cartons are washed and measured against the chart, because shrinkage on a flat sheet shows up as lost tuck.
- Head hemThe head hem is measured at several points and checked for a straight fold with no twist or wave.
- Count on the clothWarp and weft are counted with a pick glass against the contract count, each ply yarn counted once.
- Faults in the open fieldSheets are held to a light for slubs, missing picks and oil marks, which a plain rectangle shows at once.
Questions buyers ask about flat sheets
Is a 1,000 thread count sheet better than a 400?
Not of itself. Very high counts are usually reached with multi ply yarns, each ply counted as a thread. A 300 to 400 count in a fine single ply yarn often feels smoother and wears longer. Ask for thread count, yarn count and ply together.
Should my flat sheets be percale or sateen?
Choose on the feel your customers expect. Percale is crisp, matt and cooler, and wears well. Sateen is smoother with a sheen and pills sooner. Carrying both in the same colours means two cloth orders and two sets of lab dips.
Can one order cover UK, EU and US sizes?
Yes, with a size chart per market. The cloth can be shared, but mattress sizes differ, so each market needs its own cutting plan and often its own hem widths. Split the quantity by market and size on the enquiry.
Which sample should I approve before bulk?
A washed one. A sheet that measures right off the cutting table can fall short after its first wash. Approve fit and PP samples washed once at your care label setting, measured against the finished size chart, and keep the signed sheet as the reference.
