Kids shorts are a warm weather basic that parents buy several pairs of at once: pull-on jersey shorts for nursery and play, and woven twill or chino shorts for smarter summer outfits. Childrenswear brands, supermarkets and value retailers buy them in solid colours, prints and multipacks of two or three. A buyer choosing a kids shorts manufacturer in Bangladesh is buying an elastic waist that stays comfortable and a leg length that suits the market.
Garments Hub BD sends the shorts spec to two bench factories that already run knit and woven childrenswear, and both quotes come back on one sheet with the multipack priced as packed. Put the age band and market on the enquiry, so the waist build and trims are quoted to the rules that apply rather than changed after the sample.
Kinds of kids shorts
Jersey pull-on shorts
Single jersey or French terry with a full elastic waist and no fly. Nursery and play shorts for the youngest sizes, quick to dress.
Woven twill shorts
Cotton twill with an elastic back or adjustable waist, a mock or zip fly and side pockets. The smarter summer short for older children.
Cargo shorts
Twill with bellows side pockets and flaps. More pockets mean more snaps or buttons, so more trims to test and to check.
Sports shorts
Light polyester, sometimes with a mesh inner, quick drying for PE, swimming lessons and summer camps.
Multipack shorts
Two or three jersey shorts in coordinated colours or prints, one size per pack, priced on the pack rather than the piece.
What a kids shorts manufacturer in Bangladesh needs to know
- Fabric and weight
- Single jersey or French terry, typically 160 to 280 GSM, or cotton twill, typically 180 to 260 GSM. Ask for combed cotton in jersey worn next to the skin.
- Waist build
- Covered elastic in a channel, its width, and whether there is a cord. For the youngest sizes, specify no cord at all and rely on the elastic.
- Inseam by age
- Inside leg for each size and each market, because the same age is sold at quite different lengths in different countries.
- Pockets
- Side seam, slant or patch pockets, or none, and the pocket bag fabric. Jersey shorts for toddlers often leave pockets off.
- Trims
- Snaps, buttons, toggles and labels, with type and how each is attached. Stitched trims are safer than glued ones on a child's garment.
- Multipack
- Colours or prints per pack, one size per pack, polybag or card wrap, and the pack barcode.
- Size grading
- Age or height bands, with waist measured relaxed and stretched, hip and leg opening for each size.
Tests and certificates for kids shorts
- EN 14682
- EN 14682 governs cords and drawstrings on children's clothing in the EU, so a waist cord on kids shorts is designed to it from the first sample once the market and age band are known.
- US CPSIA
- Shorts for age 12 and under need a permanent tracking label, third party testing at a CPSC accepted laboratory and a Children's Product Certificate. Jersey and twill count as textiles determined not to exceed the lead limit, so tests fall on snaps, prints and coated trims.
- REACH Annex XVII, entry 27
- A metal waist snap or button on shorts rests on the stomach, so its nickel release must meet the EU limit for parts in direct and prolonged skin contact.
- ISO 16322
- Spirality after washing. Jersey shorts with a twisting knit turn the side seam forward on the leg, so ask for the result on the bulk fabric.
What moves the price of kids shorts
- Fabric: jersey against twill, and where it sits in the weight range.
- Waist build: a plain elastic channel against an adjustable waist with buttons.
- Fly and pockets: a zip fly and side pockets add several operations to a pull-on short.
- Prints: an all-over print costs more than a placement print or a plain dyed short.
- Multipack format: wrap, polybag and barcode per pack.
- Metal snaps on shorts and the US lead testing they bring.
Lead time for kids shorts
Kids shorts usually sample in 7 to 14 days, with bulk 30 to 60 days after the pre-production sample is approved. An all-over print adds a strike off approval and printing time on the fabric, and a CPSIA test on printed or metal trims adds laboratory days before shipment. Multipacks in coordinated colours need every colour ready together. The quote confirms the dates.
What we check on kids shorts before shipment
- Waist stretch and recoveryWaist measured relaxed and fully stretched against spec, then released to see the elastic return without twisting in the channel.
- Cord check by age bandCartons for the youngest sizes checked for no waist cord; older sizes checked for the cord build that was specified.
- Trim pullSnaps and buttons pull tested on sampled shorts, since a trim that comes away is a choking risk for a small child.
- Multipack make-upPacks from sampled cartons opened: colours in the agreed order, all shorts one size, and the pack barcode scanning to that size.
Questions buyers ask about kids shorts
Can kids shorts have a drawcord at the waist?
That rests on the age band and the market. For the youngest children, most buyers leave the cord out and rely on elastic. For older children a waist cord can be used if it is designed to EN 14682 for the EU. Give the factory the ages and the market before sampling.
What inseam should kids shorts have?
There is no single answer, since inseam varies by market and by fashion. Some markets prefer short lengths above the knee, others longer, knee length shorts for the same age. Send the inside leg for each size, or a sample from the range you sell, and the factory grades from it.
Do baby and toddler shorts need a different OEKO-TEX class?
Of the four OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 product classes, class I, for baby articles, is the strictest, and it suits shorts in baby sizes. If the range starts there, ask for class I on the fabric and trims of those sizes. Older children's shorts are usually certified to class II for skin contact.
How are multipack shorts priced?
Per pack, not per piece. The quote covers each pair, the wrap or polybag, the card or label and the pack barcode. Packs usually hold one size in two or three colours, and every colour must be ready together, so a delay in one holds the whole pack.
