Long sleeve tops carry a range from autumn into spring and sell as layering pieces, base layers and casual tops in their own right. They are cut and sewn in circular knit plants, but they are not tees with longer sleeves: the sleeve, the cuff and the shoulder decide how they look and wear. A long sleeve top manufacturer in Bangladesh has to grade the sleeve as carefully as the body.
Garments Hub BD sends the spec to two circular knit plants on its bench and asks each to state fabric consumption per size, so the cost of the longer sleeve shows on the quote sheet instead of hiding in a single price. At inspection, sleeve length is measured to the method written in the spec.
Kinds of long sleeve top
Long sleeve tees
Crew neck single jersey with set in sleeves, usually 160 to 200 GSM, hemmed or with a rib cuff. The volume piece of the group and the base for printed long sleeves.
Henleys
A collarless top with a three to five button placket, often in waffle, slub jersey or rib. Choose them for a casual menswear range that wants more detail than a tee.
Raglan baseball tees
Raglan sleeves running up to the neck, usually in a contrast colour and often three quarter length. Choose them for a sporty or vintage look; they need two dyed colours per style.
Mock necks
A short funnel collar in rib, usually 3 to 5 cm high, on a fitted body. Choose them for layering under jackets and for a cleaner line than a full turtleneck.
Rib tops
Fitted tops in 1x1 or 2x2 rib with elastane, close to the body and often with thumbholes. Choose them for women's ranges and base layers.
How to specify a long sleeve top
- Sleeve length method
- Say whether sleeve length runs from the shoulder point or from centre back neck. Raglans have no shoulder point, so they are always measured from centre back neck.
- Sleeve grade
- How much the sleeve grows per size, usually 1 to 2 cm in alpha sizes. A sleeve graded at the body's rate ends up too long in the large sizes.
- Cuff finish
- Rib cuff with elastane, coverstitched hem, self fabric cuff or thumbhole cuff, with cuff height and opening measured relaxed and stretched.
- Shoulder and raglan line
- Shoulder slope for set in sleeves, and the raglan angle and neck width for raglans. Both change how the top sits across the shoulders.
- Neck and placket
- Neck rib width, mock neck height, henley placket length and width, button count and button type.
- Fabric weight and use
- Lighter jersey for base layers and layering, heavier jersey or waffle for a top worn on its own. Weight changes how a long sleeve hangs.
Tests to ask a long sleeve top manufacturer in Bangladesh for
- ISO 16322
- Spirality after washing. On a long sleeve top it shows as the sleeve seam rolling towards the front of the arm, so ask for results on the bulk jersey.
- ISO 5077
- Shrinkage through ISO 6330 wash cycles. Length loss lifts the cuff off the wrist after the first wash, so measure sleeve length on a washed sample.
- AS/NZS 4399
- UPF test and classification for tops sold as sun protection in Australia and New Zealand. In the EU, EN 13758-2 allows the UV mark only at UPF 40 and above.
What moves the price of a long sleeve top
- Two full sleeves usually add about a quarter to a third more fabric than the same top with short sleeves.
- Rib cuffs are a separate knitted part, dyed to match and sewn on.
- A henley placket with buttons and buttonholes adds several short operations.
- Contrast raglan sleeves need a second fabric colour and a second lab dip.
- Thumbholes and shaped cuffs add pattern pieces and finishing time.
Lead time for long sleeve tops
A long sleeve top samples in the usual 7 to 14 days when the jersey is in stock. Contrast raglans need two lab dips approved before sampling, and dyed rib for cuffs and necks has to match the body. Bulk on long sleeve styles typically follows 30 to 60 days after PP approval. Wash the PP sample once before measuring its sleeves. The quote states each factory's dates.
What we check on long sleeve tops before shipment
- Sleeve length both sidesLeft and right sleeves measured to the stated method in three sizes, within the agreed tolerance.
- Sleeve twistWashed pieces checked for the sleeve seam rolling forward, the sign of spirality in the jersey.
- Cuff recoveryRib cuffs stretched over a hand and released to confirm they return to the relaxed opening.
- Placket and neckHenley plackets straight with clean buttonholes; mock neck height even all round and the neck seam flat.
Questions buyers ask about long sleeve tops
How is sleeve length measured on a raglan top?
From the centre back neck, over the shoulder, to the cuff edge, because a raglan has no shoulder seam to measure from. Set in sleeves can be measured from the shoulder point instead. Write the method into the size chart so every plant and inspector measures the same way.
Rib cuff or plain hemmed sleeve?
A rib cuff grips the wrist, stops the sleeve sliding over the hand and suits sporty and casual tops. A coverstitched hem looks cleaner and suits layering tees and printed long sleeves. Rib adds a dyed part and a sewing step, so it costs a little more.
How much more does a long sleeve add to a tee price?
Mainly fabric. Two full sleeves usually add about a quarter to a third more fabric by weight, plus cuffs if they are ribbed, while sewing time rises less. Ask both factories for fabric consumption per size so the difference is measured rather than guessed.
Can thumbholes be added to any long sleeve top?
On a fitted top with an extended cuff, yes. The cuff is cut longer and the opening is reinforced so it does not tear. On loose tops the sleeve twists around the thumb, so thumbholes suit rib tops and base layers rather than relaxed tees.
