School shirts, your specification

Private label

Your main label, care label, hangtag and polybag. Nominated trims accepted.

School shirts are the uniform item parents buy several of at once and wash two or three times a week. Schoolwear retailers, uniform suppliers and supermarket back to school ranges buy them in white and pale blue, short sleeve for the summer term and long sleeve for winter. A buyer looking for a school shirt manufacturer in Bangladesh mostly wants poplin that stays white through a hot wash and dries overnight.

Garments Hub BD sends the shirt spec to two factories on its bench that sew woven uniform shirting, and both quotes come back on one sheet, so the blend, the finish and the pack format can be compared directly. Factories are matched to the certificates the buyer needs, such as OEKO-TEX on poplin worn next to the skin. Inline inspection during sewing looks at collars and buttonholes first.

Kinds of school shirt

Long sleeve tie collar shirts

A point collar on a stand that sits flat under a tie, with a single button cuff. The secondary school shirt, worn all year where the uniform list includes a tie.

Short sleeve revere collar shirts

An open collar with no stand, worn without a tie. Quicker to sew than a tie collar and cooler in a warm classroom, so it is the usual primary and summer term shirt.

Non-iron and easy care shirts

Poplin treated with a cross-linking resin and cured, so it comes out of the wash smooth. Easy care is the lighter finish; non-iron uses more resin and brings a formaldehyde test for the EU.

Girls' fitted blouses

Cut on a girls' block with bust darts or princess seams, a shaped hem and a revere, point or rounded collar. Graded as its own pattern, never as the boys' shirt taken in.

What to tell a school shirt manufacturer in Bangladesh

Blend and weight
State the poly cotton ratio, usually 65/35, and the poplin weight, typically 110 to 140 GSM. White poplin at the light end can look see-through, so approve a white swatch.
Finish
Easy care, non-iron or untreated. For a resin finish, ask for the formaldehyde result on the finished poplin and its tear strength after finishing, since resin weakens the cotton in the blend.
Collar and cuff
Collar type, stand height, point length and fusing, plus the cuff style. A fused collar that curls or bubbles after a wash is the first complaint a retailer hears.
Size system
Junior shirts are usually sized by age, senior shirts by collar size in inches or centimetres. Where the range crosses from one system to the other, give both charts.
Buttons
Size in ligne, colour, number per shirt and any spare. Ask for lockstitch button sewing, which does not run back the way a chainstitch button can when one thread breaks.
Pack format
Single, twin or triple pack, fold size, collar support, card, polybag and pack barcode. Shirts sharing a pack should come from one dye lot.

Tests and certificates for school shirts

ISO 105-C06 or AATCC 61
Colour fastness to washing. Parents wash shirts hot, so ask for the ISO test at 60 °C, code C2S, on coloured poplin and on white shirts with coloured stitching or a logo.
REACH Annex XVII, entry 72
Its list of CMR substances restricted in clothing includes formaldehyde at 75 mg/kg, and the resin on non-iron school shirt poplin is the usual source, so test the finished fabric.
ISO 5077 with ISO 6330
Dimensional change after washing. On a shirt the collar band is the figure to watch, because a small loss there and the top button no longer closes over a tie.
OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100
Harmful substance testing on poplin, buttons and thread. Shirts fall in class II, for articles worn next to the skin; class I, for baby articles, is the strictest of the four.

What moves the price of a school shirt

  • Long sleeve against short sleeve: cuffs, sleeve plackets and extra poplin add cost to every shirt.
  • Finish: non-iron costs more than easy care, which costs more than untreated poplin.
  • Collar build: a tie collar on a stand takes more operations than a revere collar.
  • Pack format: twin and triple packs add a card, collar support, polybag and pack barcode.

Lead time for school shirts

A school shirt usually takes 7 to 14 days to sample and 30 to 60 days in bulk after the pre-production sample is approved. A non-iron finish adds a resin and curing step at the mill, and poplin dyed to a school shade adds a lab dip round. The quote confirms the dates.

What we check on school shirts before shipment

  • Collar points and bandPoints equal in length, collar band measured against the size label, and the collar lying flat with the top button fastened.
  • Buttons and buttonholesButtonholes cut clean with no fraying, buttons lockstitched and pull checked, since a loose shirt button is a choking risk for younger pupils.
  • White and shadeWhite shirts compared across cartons for a yellow or grey cast; coloured shirts checked against the approved lab dip under one light.
  • Twin pack contentsPacks opened from sampled cartons: two shirts, one size label, one shade, and a barcode that scans to the collar size printed on the card.

Questions buyers ask about school shirts

Should a school shirt be poly cotton or pure cotton?

Poly cotton for most programmes. A 65/35 poplin washes hot, keeps its white longer and dries overnight. Pure cotton poplin feels softer and suits a range sold on comfort, but it creases and shrinks more, so it usually needs a non-iron finish to sell beside poly cotton.

What is the difference between non-iron and easy care school shirts?

Both are resin finishes cured into the poplin. Easy care uses less resin and cuts creasing, so a quick press is enough. Non-iron uses more, so the shirt can be worn from the line, but the handle is firmer, tear strength drops and the formaldehyde result needs watching for the EU.

How are school shirts sized for juniors and seniors?

Junior shirts are usually sold by age and senior shirts by collar size in inches or centimetres. The two systems use different blocks and sleeve lengths, so a senior shirt is not a junior shirt relabelled with a collar size. Send both charts with the quantity per size, and say at which age the range switches.

Does a US order of school shirts need CPSIA testing?

For school shirt sizes for age 12 and under, yes: a permanent tracking label, third party testing at a CPSC accepted laboratory and a Children's Product Certificate. Dyed and undyed poplin is determined not to exceed the lead limit, so lead testing on a school shirt falls on the buttons and any printed logo.
