Shorts look like one product and are made in four kinds of plant. Chino and cargo shorts come from woven bottom lines, denim shorts from plants that work with a laundry, sweat shorts from knit plants and sports shorts from activewear units. A shorts manufacturer in Bangladesh for a mixed summer order is usually several, and the order places more easily when each style is matched to its plant.
Garments Hub BD sends each short to two plants on its bench that run its construction, often the plants that make the matching trouser, and returns the quotes on one sheet. Where a short shares cloth with a trouser already on order, the brief asks for one fabric booking for both.
Kinds of shorts and the plants that make them
Chino shorts
Cotton or stretch cotton twill from a woven bottom plant, with a fly, belt loops and slant pockets. Choose them as the summer partner to a chino trouser cut in the same cloth.
Cargo shorts
Twill or ripstop with bellows thigh pockets and flaps, from the plants that make cargo trousers. Choose them for outdoor and workwear ranges where the pockets carry weight.
Denim shorts
Cut from jeans blocks in a denim plant and finished in its laundry, with a rolled, raw or hemmed edge. Choose them when the range already has a jean and a wash story.
Sweat shorts
French terry or fleece with an elastic waist and drawcord, from circular knit plants. Choose them for loungewear and as the summer match to a hoodie or sweatshirt.
Sports shorts
Woven polyester or knit mesh, with or without a liner, from activewear units. Choose woven for running and court sports and knit mesh for team training.
Kids shorts
Twill or jersey with an elastic or adjustable waist, made to children's rules on cords and trims. Choose them as part of a kids range sized by age or height.
How to specify shorts
- Inseam per style
- The inseam in centimetres or inches for each style, typically 5, 7 or 9 inches on men's shorts, and whether it stays fixed or grades across sizes.
- Hem finish
- Turn up cuff tacked at the side seams, raw or frayed edge, single needle hem, coverstitch or split side hem. Each reads differently at the same length.
- Waist build
- Fixed waistband with fly and belt loops, full elastic with drawcord, or half elastic at the back. It decides whether the block starts from a trouser or a knit pant.
- Leg opening
- Leg opening width, measured flat, alongside the inseam. A wide opening on a short inseam reads as a different garment from the same length cut slim.
- Shared cloth with trousers
- Name any trouser in the range the short shares fabric with, so both are cut from one booking and one dye lot.
- Pockets and liners
- Slant, side seam, cargo or zip pockets, and any brief or mesh liner in sports and swim styles.
Tests to ask a shorts manufacturer in Bangladesh for
- ISO 5077
- Shrinkage shows more on a short than on a trouser: losing 1 cm on a 13 cm inseam changes the look. Ask for length results on each fabric, measured through ISO 6330 wash cycles.
- EN 14682
- Cords and drawstrings on children's clothing in the EU, including waist drawstrings on kids shorts, which are limited in length and form by age band. Name the age band with the style.
- ISO 105-X12
- Colour fastness to rubbing. Indigo denim shorts rub against seats and light tops, so ask for dry and wet rubbing grades on each wash.
What moves the price of shorts
- A short uses far less fabric than its trouser but keeps most of the trouser's sewing steps.
- Bellows pockets and flaps on cargo shorts add pieces and bar tacks.
- Denim washes and hand finishing on raw hems are priced per garment.
- A liner in sports shorts adds a second garment inside the first.
- A fabric booking for shorts alone costs more than sharing one with a trouser.
Lead time for shorts
Shorts sell in spring and summer, so the ship date is set by the floor date rather than the factory. With samples in the usual 7 to 14 days, bulk 30 to 60 days after PP approval and 60 to 90 days typical from order confirmation to shipment, a spring drop is usually confirmed in the autumn before. Denim wash approval adds days. The quote confirms each style's dates.
What we check on shorts before shipment
- Inseam in every sizeInseam and leg opening measured in each size, with left and right legs checked to match.
- Turn up cuffsCuff depth even all round and tacked at the side seams so it does not drop after washing.
- Crotch junctionThe crotch seam junction aligned and bar tacked, since shorts take strain there every time the wearer sits.
- Kids waist cordsOn children's sizes, waist cord length and free ends checked against the EN 14682 spec agreed for the age band.
Questions buyers ask about shorts
Should the inseam change with the size?
On men's shorts the inseam is often held at one length, such as 7 inches, across all sizes, so the look stays the same. Women's and kids shorts more often grade it. Either works if it is written into the spec; disputes come from leaving it out.
Can chino shorts share fabric with a chino trouser order?
Yes, and it usually lowers cost. If both styles use the same twill in the same colours, one fabric booking and one dye lot cover both, and the shorts follow the trouser on the same line. Send both styles in one enquiry and name the shared colours.
Which plants make a mixed order of chino, denim and sweat shorts?
Usually three: a woven bottom plant for chino and cargo, a denim plant with a laundry for denim, and a knit plant for sweat shorts. Each part is quoted by plants that run it and carries its own minimum per colour, so a thin line may be better merged.
Will a raw hem on denim shorts keep fraying?
It frays to a point and then settles, usually after a few washes. A line of stitching just above the edge stops the fray running up the leg. Agree the fray length on the approved sample and in the spec, so inspection does not reject a deliberate finish.
