A hooded down jacket adds a hood to a quilted down body, fixed in place or detachable by zip or press studs, and either filled with down or only lined. The hood carries most of the design decisions: baffles that match the body, adjusters that keep it on in wind, a faux fur ruff on colder styles. Kinds of hooded down jacket
Fixed filled hood
The hood is sewn on and quilted with baffles that run on from the body. The warmest build and the simplest to seal against wind at the neck.
Zip-off hood
The hood joins with a zip along the collar seam, usually hidden under a flap. One jacket sells as two looks; the zip must match the collar length exactly.
Stud-on hood
Press studs or buttons along the collar hold the hood. Cheaper than a zip, but gaps between studs let wind in.
Stowaway hood
A thin hood folded into a zipped collar. Common on lighter styles; the collar has to hold it without looking bulky.
Faux fur ruff
A pile trim around the face opening, fixed or detachable by zip, studs or loops. Adds a colder weather look and shelters the face.

- A stand collar with its own shape and fill, so the jacket looks complete without the hood. Give the collar height.

- Height from neck seam to crown, face opening width and hood depth, graded or fixed across sizes.

- Pile height, colour, the way it attaches, and whether it comes off for washing.
Tests and labels for hooded down jackets
- EN 12934
- EU rules for the down and feather composition label. Settle the hood fill before the label is written, since a down body with a wadded hood is not one filling.
- Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011
- The EU fibre names rule. A faux fur ruff is usually acrylic or modacrylic; whether it is labelled as a component or left out as a trim depends on its size and attachment, so settle the wording early.
- 16 CFR 1610
- The US flammability rule for clothing textiles. A ruff made entirely of acrylic or modacrylic pile is exempt from its testing; a pile that blends in another fibre is a raised surface fabric and should be tested.

Questions buyers ask about hooded down jackets
Should the hood be fixed or detachable?
Fixed is warmer and cheaper to build, and suits technical and colder styles. Detachable widens the jacket's use for city ranges but needs a finished collar and a zip or studs that line up. Decide before the proto; it changes the collar pattern.
Does the hood need to be filled with down?
On a jacket sold for cold weather, yes; an unfilled hood beside a warm body feels thin and draws complaints. Lighter styles can use thin wadding or a lined hood. State hood fill grams so both factories quote the same thing.
Can the faux fur ruff be removed for washing?
It can, by zip, studs or loops. A detachable ruff keeps the pile from matting in the machine and lets the jacket be cleaned at home. A fixed ruff costs less but ties the jacket to specialist cleaning.
Is the hood graded with the jacket sizes?
Often only partly. Hoods are commonly made in two or three sizes across the range rather than one per jacket size. Give hood measurements per size or the grade rule you want, and check the face opening on the smallest and largest samples.
