A flip flop is held on by a post between the first two toes and two straps running to the sides of the sole. Every step pulls the post upward, so it is the point where flip flops fail. A leather flip flop manufacturer in Bangladesh should anchor the post with a plug or a plate under the footbed rather than relying on adhesive, and cover the footbed in a leather that can sit against wet skin.
Garments Hub BD has not yet vetted a sandal unit, so the desk searches for each flip flop enquiry. It asks units to cut a finished pair open and show how the toe post is fixed, checks the strap anchors at the sides, visits the unit that passes, and replies inside 5 working days with a real quote or a straight no.
Kinds of leather flip flop
Leather covered EVA flip flop
A light EVA sole with a leather footbed cover and leather straps. Soft and inexpensive to make; the post needs a plate under the footbed, because soft EVA alone grips a plug poorly.
Stacked leather sole flip flop
Layers of leather or leather board stacked to form the sole, with a rubber top piece. Firm and traditional, and slippery when wet unless a rubber layer is added underneath.
Rubber sole flip flop
A treaded rubber sole with a leather footbed and straps, for beach and wet use. Heavier and grippy; the post plug sits in the rubber and has to be sealed against water.
Contoured footbed thong
A moulded footbed with an arch and a heel cup, covered in leather or suede. The post position has to match the contour, or it rubs between the toes.
Specifying for a leather flip flop manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Toe post
- Material, thickness and anchoring: a plug through the sole, a plate under the footbed, or both. Adhesive on its own is not an anchor and should not be accepted.
- Side straps
- Leather, width, lining and the angle of the V, and how each strap end is fixed into the sole at the sides.
- Footbed
- Leather, suede or a textured leather for grip, flat or contoured. The cover touches wet skin, so state the tannage and the finish.
- Sole
- EVA, rubber, PU or stacked leather, with thickness at heel and toe and the tread. Rubber, or a rubber layer, suits wet markets.
- Post position
- The distance from the post to the back of the heel for each size. A post set too far back or forward makes the sandal rub.
- Edges
- Painted, burnished or wrapped edges on the sole and straps. On a flip flop the edges are a large part of what a buyer sees on the shelf.
Tests and certificates for leather flip flops
- Toe post pull test
- Pulls the post straight up from the sole with a set force and records whether it moves or comes out. It is the test to insist on before approving any flip flop sample.
- Side strap anchor pull
- The same pull applied to each side anchor. A unit that plates the post but leaves the side anchors in adhesive fails here.
- Slip resistance when wet
- Measures sole grip on a wet floor. Ask for it on any flip flop sold for beach, pool or shower use, and name the surface to be tested.
- REACH Annex XVII, entry 43
- A dyed flip flop footbed stays in contact with damp skin for hours, so for the EU each colour should show no release of listed amines from azo dyes above 30 mg/kg.
What moves the price of a leather flip flop
- Post anchoring: a plate and plug take more parts and labour than a plug alone.
- Footbed: a flat leather cover against a moulded and covered contour.
- Sole: EVA is cheaper than rubber, PU or stacked leather.
- Lined and stitched straps against single layer straps with painted edges.
- Decoration on the straps, such as braiding, beads or metal trims.
Lead time for leather flip flops
Flip flop samples typically take 14 to 21 days, and bulk 45 to 70 days after pre-production approval. A contoured footbed or a new sole shape needs a mould per size first, which adds days, while a flat sole cut from sheet does not. Toe post and strap pull tests run on the approved sample and are timed into the plan. The quote gives the final dates.
What we check on leather flip flops before shipment
- Toe post pull on bulkPairs from each colour are pulled at the post to the agreed force before packing starts.
- Post sealThe hole where the post passes through the footbed is sealed and flat, with no plug edge felt underfoot.
- Strap angleBoth straps meet the post at matching angles on the left and right foot, so the pair sits symmetrically.
- Footbed surfaceThe leather cover is smooth and fully bonded, with no adhesive marks or lifting at the toe and heel.
Questions buyers ask about leather flip flops
How should a leather flip flop toe post be fixed?
Through the sole with a plug, backed by a plate or a wide washer under the footbed. A post held only by adhesive pulls out early in wear. Ask the unit to cut a sample in half to show the anchor, then pull test it before you approve.
Will leather footbeds stain wet feet?
They can, if the dye is not well fixed. Ask for a colour transfer check on the footbed leather under wet and sweat conditions, and avoid unfinished dark leathers for beach styles, where feet stay damp for hours at a time.
Is a leather sole flip flop safe on wet floors?
A plain leather sole is slippery when wet. Add a rubber layer or a rubber heel and forefoot, or choose a rubber sole, if the flip flop will be worn near water, and ask for a wet slip result on the chosen sole.
What size run do flip flops need?
Usually whole sizes, because an open back sandal tolerates small differences in length. The post still has to be placed for each size, so the run cannot be squeezed into too few lengths without some pairs rubbing between the toes.
