Oxford cloth is a basket weave: paired warp yarns cross a thicker weft, giving a slightly pebbled face and a cloth that wears well. It is the shirting of the button down collar, sold by casual menswear, campus and smart casual labels. An oxford shirt manufacturer in Bangladesh is judged on two things a customer sees at once: how the collar rolls when buttoned, and how the cloth looks after it has been washed.

Garments Hub BD sends your collar drawing, cloth choice and wash reference to two factories on its bench, so both quotes cover the same make. Collar roll is judged at the fit sample, and a garment washed version is measured after washing before the pattern is final. Collar points and back pleats are photographed during sewing, and the photographs are yours.

Kinds of oxford shirt

Plain oxford

The classic, often a coloured warp with a white weft for a soft heathered face. Usually the heavier end of the range, worn casual with a button down collar and a chest pocket.

Pinpoint oxford

The same weave in finer yarns, so the face is smoother and the cloth lighter. It sits closer to a dress shirt and takes a spread collar and a tie as well as a button down.

Royal oxford

A more pronounced basket texture with a slight sheen. Chosen for smart ranges where the cloth itself should be noticed, and usually priced above plain oxford.

University stripe oxford

Yarn dyed stripes, often blue or pink on white, woven into oxford. The stripe has to line up at the placket and pocket, which plain oxford never needs.

Garment washed oxford

Sewn first, then washed for a softer hand and a slight pucker along the seams. The pattern is cut larger to allow for the wash, and shade moves a little from lot to lot.

How to brief an oxford shirt manufacturer in Bangladesh

Cloth and yarn
Name plain, pinpoint or royal oxford and give GSM and yarn count. Pinpoint uses finer yarns, so two cloths of the same weight can feel very different.
Button down collar
Give point length, spread and the button position on each point. Ask for a soft or unfused collar to keep the roll; a stiffly fused collar lies flat and loses it.
Back details
State box pleat or plain back, a locker loop in the yoke seam, and a back collar button if wanted. Each is a small operation the factory prices separately.
Wash
Raw, rinsed or garment washed, with a reference shirt for hand and shade. A garment wash needs its shrinkage measured on a washed fit sample before the pattern is enlarged.
Block and hem
Oxford has enough weight for a straighter, roomier block and a shorter curved hem worn untucked. Give chest ease and hem shape, not only body length.

Tests for oxford shirting

ISO 12947
Martindale abrasion. The basket weave wears well on the body, but collar folds and cuff edges rub through first. Ask for rubs to breakdown on the bulk cloth.
ISO 13937
Tear strength. An enzyme or stone garment wash takes strength out of cotton, so test tear on washed cloth when the shirt is sold washed, not only on cloth as delivered.
AATCC 150
Dimensional change of the finished garment in home laundering, used by US buyers. Run it on garment washed oxford to confirm the enlarged pattern lands on the size chart.

What moves the price of an oxford shirt

  • Pinpoint or royal oxford against plain oxford, since finer yarns cost more per metre.
  • Yarn dyed stripes, which must line up at placket and pocket and so use more cloth.
  • A garment wash, adding a process, losses in the laundry and a larger pattern.
  • Back details: box pleat, locker loop and back collar button each add a small operation.
  • Button choice and count, including the two small buttons on the collar points.

Lead time for oxford shirts

Fit samples usually take 7 to 14 days, and a garment washed oxford may need a second fit round once its shrinkage is known. Bulk oxford usually runs 30 to 60 days after written PP approval. A stripe developed for you at the mill adds weaving time before cutting, and the garment wash adds days at the end of the line. Both are dated in the quote.

What we check on oxford shirts before shipment

  • Collar rollEach sampled collar is buttoned and viewed side on: both points roll evenly and the buttons sit at matching heights.
  • Weave faultsFront panels are checked for missing picks and broken ends, which show as lines across the plain face of an oxford.
  • Box pleat and loopThe pleat sits centred under the yoke, and the locker loop is caught firmly in the yoke seam rather than tacked on.
  • Washed sizeOn washed oxford, shirts from each wash load are measured against the size chart, because shrinkage varies from load to load.

Questions buyers ask about oxford shirts

Plain oxford or pinpoint for a smart casual range?

Pinpoint if the shirt will be worn with a jacket or a tie, since its smoother face reads dressier. Plain oxford if it is worn open, untucked or washed, because its texture looks better with wear. Many ranges carry both on one block.

Why does a button down collar lie flat instead of rolling?

Usually the collar is fused too stiffly, the points are too short, or the buttons sit too close to the point. Ask for a softer or unfused interlining and longer points at the fit sample, and judge the roll with the collar buttoned.

How much bigger is the pattern for a garment washed oxford?

It depends on the cloth and the wash recipe, so the factory washes a fit sample and measures it before setting the allowance. Expect a second fit round on a new cloth. An AATCC 150 result on the PP sample confirms the final size.

Can the locker loop and back collar button be left off?

Yes. Both are traditional details rather than structural ones, and leaving them off saves a little sewing time and two small trims. Keep the box pleat on a roomy block, since it gives movement across the shoulders and back when the arms reach forward.
