Kinds of ribbed tank top
Fine 1x1 rib vest
Single wales alternate face and back, giving a flat, fine stripe that reads almost plain from a distance. Choose it for a clean fitted vest that layers under shirts and jackets without showing texture.
2x2 rib vest
Pairs of wales give deeper channels and a bolder vertical line. Choose it when the rib is the look of the garment, for loungewear and summer tops sold on texture.
Cotton elastane rib vest
Rib with a small share of elastane, usually 3 to 5 percent, so the body snaps back after stretching. Choose it for second skin fits and cropped vests that must not bag at the hem by evening.
Wide or drop needle rib vest
Wider ribs such as 3x1, or ribs with needles left out to form flat channels. Choose them for a fashion rib with a distinct pattern; each needs a sample of its own, since its stretch differs from 1x1.

- Rib structure
- 1x1, 2x2 or a wider rib, with a swatch if you have one. The structure sets both the look and the stretch, so quotes on two different ribs cannot be compared.
- Weight, measured relaxed
- Usually 180 to 220 GSM, weighed on relaxed fabric after washing. Rib weighed while held open at full width reads lighter than it wears.
- Fibre and elastane
- Cotton alone, or cotton with elastane, usually 3 to 5 percent. Elastane improves recovery but needs heat setting at the dye house, which the quote should show.
- Stretch and recovery
- How far the chest should stretch and how close to its relaxed width it must return after release. Agree the measuring method with the factory before the fit sample.
- Relaxed measurements
- Chest, waist and length measured flat with the rib relaxed, with a tolerance, usually plus or minus 1 to 1.5 cm. Rib measured under tension looks oversized on paper.
- Grading
- Rib gives more than jersey, so the vest is cut smaller than the body it fits, and grade rules from a jersey block may not carry over. Fit the smallest and largest sizes too.
- Edge finish
- Binding cut from the same rib, a turned and coverstitched edge, or a folded binding. Self rib binding keeps the stripe running into the neckline.
Tests for ribbed tank tops
- ISO 5077 with ISO 6330
- Shows how the rib vest changes after washing. Ask for length and width reported separately: rib tends to grow longer and narrower, and one averaged figure hides that.
- ISO 12945-2
- Pilling by the modified Martindale method. A fitted rib rubs at the underarm and under bag straps, so ask for the grade on bulk rib, not on a development swatch.
- EN 12127
- Mass per unit area from small samples. Use it to confirm the bulk rib matches the weight you approved, measured on relaxed fabric in both cases.
What moves the price of a ribbed tank top
- Rib structure: wider and drop needle ribs are knitted to order on a machine set up for them, and need sampling of their own.
- Elastane content, which raises yarn cost and adds heat setting at the dye house.
- Weight: rib at 220 GSM puts noticeably more yarn into each vest than rib at 180 GSM.
- Folded binding, which adds a cutting and folding step that a turned edge avoids.

Should I choose 1x1 or 2x2 rib for a fitted vest?
Choose 1x1 for a fine, flat stripe that layers well and reads almost plain. Choose 2x2 when the rib itself is the design and you want deeper channels. Weight, fibre and elastane matter as much as the structure, so fix all four in the spec before the factories quote.
Does a ribbed vest need elastane?
