A school skirt has to keep its pleats through a year of sitting, cycling and washing, at a length the school will accept. Schoolwear retailers and uniform suppliers buy them in grey, navy, black and tartan checks for primary and secondary lists, often beside a pinafore in the same cloth. Anyone sourcing from a school skirt manufacturer in Bangladesh is really buying a pleat that stays set.
Garments Hub BD sends the skirt spec to two bench factories and asks each to name where and how the pleats are set, so the quotes on the comparison sheet describe the same process. Inline inspection during sewing measures pleat depth and the waistband join, and the photographs from each stage are yours.
Kinds of school skirt
Knife pleat skirts
Pleats all facing one way round the body, the traditional senior skirt. It takes more cloth per waist size than other styles and depends entirely on how well the pleats were set.
Box pleat skirts
Pairs of pleats folded towards each other, front and back, so the skirt sits flatter at the hip. A common primary style that keeps its shape on a moving child.
Kilt skirts
A wrap front with a fringed edge and buckled straps, usually in a tartan check. Matching the check across the wrap and the pleats is where the cost goes.
A line skirts
No pleats, shaped with darts or panels and flaring to the hem. The quickest to make, and the safe choice where pleat complaints have hurt a range before.
Skirts with built-in shorts
Jersey or woven shorts stitched into the waistband under a pleated or A line skirt, for primary pupils who climb and play. Also sold as skorts.
What a school skirt manufacturer in Bangladesh needs to know
- Cloth and blend
- Poly viscose with the polyester share stated, since polyester is the fibre that holds a heat set pleat. For a tartan, give the check repeat and the yarn colours.
- Pleat type and count
- Knife, box or inverted pleats, the number round the body, pleat depth, and how far the stitched down section runs below the waistband.
- Pleat setting
- Machine pleated or paper pattern pleated and steamed. Ask the factory to state the setting temperature and dwell time on the pre-production sample report.
- Waist
- Half elastic at the back, buttonhole elastic adjusters, or a fixed waistband with a side zip and button. Junior sizes usually take elastic.
- Length by school rule
- Waist to hem length for each size, and whether each waist comes in two lengths, so a tall pupil can meet the rule without a bigger waist.
- Shorts under the skirt
- Built in or separate, jersey or woven, leg length, and how the shorts join the waistband without adding bulk.
Tests and certificates for school skirts
- ISO 5077 with ISO 6330
- Dimensional change after washing, measured on a finished pleated skirt, not only the cloth, because shrinkage pulls the pleats open at the hem.
- ISO 12945-2
- Pilling by modified Martindale. Poly viscose pills at the seat where the skirt rubs a chair, and the polyester anchors the pills, so the grade matters on this item.
- REACH Annex XVII, entry 27
- On a school skirt the waistband hook and a metal zip are the parts in direct and prolonged skin contact whose nickel release is limited, so ask for nickel free hardware on EU orders.
What moves the price of a school skirt
- Pleat count and depth: a knife pleat skirt uses much more cloth than an A line.
- The pleating and setting step, a cost an A line skirt does not carry.
- Check matching on tartan and kilt styles, which raises cutting waste and sewing time.
- Waist build: adjustable elastic with buttons costs more than a half elastic back.
- Built-in shorts, which add a second garment's cloth and sewing to each skirt.
Lead time for school skirts
A school skirt usually samples in 7 to 14 days, with bulk 30 to 60 days after the pre-production sample is approved. Pleat setting is an extra step after cutting, and panels sent to an outside pleating unit add transport and queue time. A yarn dyed tartan needs its own weaving time before cutting, usually longer than a plain piece dyed cloth. The quote confirms each date.
What we check on school skirts before shipment
- Pleat retention after a washOne skirt from bulk washed to the care label and hung to dry: pleats should come back sharp to the hem, not soften in the lower half.
- Pleat spacing and depthPleats measured at waist and hem against the pattern, since uneven spacing makes the hem hang lower on one side.
- Check matchingOn tartan and kilt skirts, checks matched at the side seams, across the wrap and at the waistband, to the tolerance agreed.
- Length per sizeWaist to hem measured on each length option, with the length marked on the label and the bag matching the skirt inside.
Questions buyers ask about school skirts
How can I be sure the pleats on a school skirt will stay in?
Ask for three things: the polyester share in the blend, the setting method with its temperature, and a washed sample. A polyester rich poly viscose that is heat set properly keeps its pleats through repeated washing. Pleats pressed in without heat setting soften within weeks.
Can a school skirt come in two lengths for one waist size?
Yes. Many programmes offer a standard and a longer length per waist, so a tall pupil can meet the school's rule without buying a bigger waist. Each length is a separate size on the size curve and the quote, with its own quantity.
Is a kilt pin safe on a junior school skirt?
A loose kilt pin is a sharp, detachable part, so junior kilts usually leave it off or carry a decorative pin stitched firmly in place. Older pupils' kilts may keep a working pin with a closed catch. State the age range and the market with the enquiry.
Should primary skirts have built-in shorts or separate ones?
Built-in shorts suit the youngest pupils, who climb in the skirt, and make one item to buy. Separate shorts suit schools that allow either, and keep the skirt cheaper. Built-in versions need a waistband that carries both layers without bulk at the side seams.
