A dad cap is a six panel cap with nothing behind the front: no buckram, no foam, a soft crown that sits low and follows the head, and a curved peak. It is usually washed after sewing for a broken in look. Leaving out the stiffening and fusing makes it cheaper to make than a structured cap. A dad cap manufacturer in Bangladesh sews it on the same kind of line as a baseball cap. Buyers are fashion brands, merch drops and gift ranges.
Buyers often ask for a dad cap and send a photograph of a structured one, so the desk confirms the build in words: unstructured, low profile, no buckram. It looks for a unit with a garment washing source it can name, visits it, and has washed samples checked for shade and embroidery after the wash.
Kinds of dad cap
Washed cotton twill dad caps
Cotton twill, usually 180 to 250 GSM, enzyme or stone washed after sewing for a soft hand and faded edges. Choose it for the classic broken in dad cap.
Pigment dyed dad caps
Sewn in undyed cotton, then dyed as finished caps with pigment and washed, so seams fade a little differently on each cap. Choose it for a vintage look and expect shade variation.
Distressed dad caps
Frayed peak edges and an abraded crown, made by hand or machine after sewing. Choose it for a worn look; agree the distress on a reference cap, since no two come out alike.
Chambray and light denim dad caps
A light indigo or chambray crown that softens and fades with wear. Choose it for summer ranges; indigo needs a rubbing test because it marks pale clothing.
Organic cotton dad caps
Certified organic twill for brands that sell on an organic content claim. Choose it with a certificate that reaches the unit sewing the cap.
Specifying for a dad cap manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Structure in words
- Write unstructured, no buckram, no fusing, low profile. Each unit reads a photograph differently, and many lines default to structured.
- Crown depth
- The front height in centimetres, usually about 8 to 8.5 cm on a low profile, so the cap sits down on the head.
- Wash
- Enzyme, stone, or pigment dye and wash; the target shade after washing; and whether the wash comes before or after embroidery.
- Peak
- Curved, its length, a soft or semi stiff insert, and a clean or frayed edge.
- Strap
- Self fabric strap with a brass, antique brass or gunmetal slide buckle or a metal clasp, and the strap end finish.
- Embroidery on a soft front
- Flat embroidery sized for a soft panel, with a backing that leaves the front soft after stitching.
Tests and certificates for dad caps
- ISO 5077 with ISO 6330
- Size change after laundering. A cap washed after sewing can shrink, so measure head circumference and crown depth on washed dad caps against the specification.
- ISO 105-X12
- Rubbing fastness on pigment dyed and indigo dad caps, which rub off more than reactive dyed ones; ask for dry and wet grades before approving the wash.
- OCS
- Follows the organic share of the twill through to the finished cap, without chemical or social criteria. Enough for an organic content label, while GOTS also covers processing.
What moves the price of a dad cap
- No buckram or fusing: fewer materials and operations make it cheaper than a structured cap in the same fabric.
- Wash type: a plain enzyme wash costs less than pigment dyeing finished caps and sorting them by shade.
- Distressing: hand fraying and abrasion add labour per cap and vary piece to piece.
- Buckle finish: an antique brass slide or a custom engraved clasp costs more than a plain metal slide.
- Embroidery: priced by stitch count, though dad caps usually carry smaller flat logos.
Lead time for dad caps
A dad cap sample usually takes 10 to 14 days and bulk usually 35 to 50 days after the PP sample is signed. Garment washing or pigment dyeing after sewing adds days and a shade approval on washed caps. If the wash comes after embroidery, the sew out must be washed too. A custom engraved buckle adds its own lead time. Dates are set in the quote.
What we check on dad caps before shipment
- Shade after washingWashed caps are sorted against the approved shade band, since garment washing varies between batches.
- Embroidery after the washLogos are checked for pucker, shrinkage and thread fading after the wash, against the washed sew out.
- No hidden stiffeningFronts are pressed flat to confirm no buckram or fusing was added, which would turn it into a structured style.
- Fray controlDistressed peak edges are checked for fray length within the reference, with stitching rows left intact.
Questions buyers ask about dad caps
Why does my dad cap sample look like a baseball cap?
Usually because the unit used its structured block or fused the front. Dad caps need the words unstructured, no buckram and low profile on the specification, plus a front height. Send a reference cap if you have one, as photographs flatten the crown.
Should the cap be washed before or after embroidery?
After, for a vintage look where the logo fades with the cap; before, for a crisp logo on a soft cap. Washing after embroidery can pucker the stitching, so approve a washed sew out first.
Are dad caps cheaper than baseball caps?
Usually a little, for the same fabric and logo, because there is no buckram, no fusing and less shaping. A garment wash, pigment dyeing or distressing can take that saving back. Ask for the quote with and without the wash to see the difference.
Can each pigment dyed cap match exactly?
No. Pigment dyeing finished caps gives small shade differences between caps and batches, which is part of the look. Agree a shade band with light and dark limits on approved caps, and have caps sorted to it before packing.
