Duffle coats, your specification

Made to your tech pack, fabric and colours by a factory matched to the order.

A duffle coat closes with toggles passed through leather or rope loops, carries a hood and patch pockets, and is cut from heavy milled wool so it can be worn without a jacket underneath. It sits in heritage, campus and childrenswear ranges as the coat that changes least from season to season. A duffle coat manufacturer in Bangladesh has to handle a thick cloth, a hood and a set of trims that are as visible as the cloth itself.

Most decisions on this coat are trims, so name the toggle material, the loop material and the loop length on the enquiry. Both factories then quote against the same trim list, and the inspection photographs show the toggles and loops as they go on, which is where a duffle is won or lost.

Kinds of duffle coat

Classic duffle with leather loops

Four toggles on leather straps, a fixed hood with a throat tab, flapped patch pockets and a shoulder yoke. Often cut from a cloth with a check reverse instead of a lining.

Rope loop duffle

Toggles on cotton or jute rope loops for a softer, more casual front. Rope stretches and frays, so the loop length and the finish at the cut ends need specifying.

Short duffle

Hip length, usually three toggles and a lighter melton. A lower cost version for younger buyers and milder weather; the hood stays, so the neck build does not change.

Duffle with detachable hood

The hood fastens under the collar with buttons or studs. It widens the season, but the neck needs a finished collar of its own for when the hood is off.

What a duffle coat manufacturer in Bangladesh needs to know

Toggles
Material, horn, wood or resin, length usually 4 to 6 cm, and colour. Toggles are a nominated trim, so give the supplier or approve a sample before the PP sample.
Loops
Leather, suede or rope; the loop length when fastened, and how it is fixed, sewn under a patch or riveted. A loop must pass over its toggle easily with a cold hand.
Hood
Height, depth, two or three panels, and a throat tab or chin strap. A three panel hood sits closer to the head and takes longer to sew.
Shoulder yoke
Many duffles carry a separate yoke over the shoulders. Say if you want it, because it adds a layer and a seam the thick cloth must take cleanly.
Cloth
Heavy melton, usually 600 to 850 GSM, plain or with a check reverse woven in. A double face cloth saves a lining but limits colours to what the mill holds.
Edges and seams
Thick melton is often sewn with bound seams, and milled edges can be left raw on pocket flaps because they do not fray. State the edge finish.

Tests and certificates for a duffle coat

REACH Annex XVII, entry 47
Leather toggle loops are handled at every fastening, so the EU limit of 3 mg/kg chromium VI in leather touching the skin applies; ask for the test on the loop leather.
LWG
If the range makes a sourcing claim, ask which tannery made the loop leather and its rating from this environmental audit: gold, silver, bronze or audited.
ISO 105-X12
Colour fastness to rubbing. Dyed rope and dark leather loops can mark a pale melton or the wearer's hands; ask for wet rubbing on the loop material as well as the cloth.

What moves the price of a duffle coat

  • Toggle material: real horn costs most, wood sits in the middle, resin made to look like horn least.
  • Loop material and fixing: leather sewn under a patch against rope stitched into the seam.
  • Cloth weight, and whether the melton has a check reverse woven in instead of a separate lining.
  • Hood build: three panels, a lined hood and a throat tab each add pieces.
  • Seam finish on thick melton, where bound seams take longer than plain pressed ones.

Lead time for duffle coats

On a duffle coat the trims usually set the pace. Horn or wood toggles and leather loops come from a nominated supplier, and a toggle not approved before the PP sample holds up cutting. Heavy melton in a set colour is often made to order and adds mill time. The quote lists each of these, and the span from order confirmation to shipment is usually 60 to 90 days.

What we check on duffle coats before shipment

  • Toggle securityEach toggle is pulled by hand and its stitching or cord checked, because a toggle that spins loose falls off within weeks.
  • Loop lengthEvery loop passes over its toggle without forcing and holds it without slipping, on every size checked.
  • Hood symmetryThe hood seam lines up with the centre back, and the hood sits evenly both raised and folded down.
  • Seam bulkSeams on heavy melton lie flat after pressing, with no ridge showing through at the yoke or pocket corners.

Questions buyers ask about duffle coats

Should duffle toggles be horn, wood or resin?

Horn has the heritage look and the highest cost, and each toggle varies in colour. Wood looks warmer and sits mid price. Resin made to look like horn is uniform, cheapest and takes any colour. Volume ranges usually choose resin; heritage ranges expect horn or wood. Approve a toggle sample early either way.

Leather or rope loops on a duffle coat?

Leather is the traditional choice and holds its length; it brings a chromium VI test for the EU and a tannery question if you make sourcing claims. Rope is softer and cheaper but stretches and can fray at the ends, so its length and end finish must be specified. Some ranges use leather on the main line and rope on a casual one.

Does a duffle coat need a lining?

Not always. Heavy melton is warm and does not fray, so the classic coat is often half lined or cut from a cloth with a check reverse. A full lining helps the coat slide over knitwear and hides inside seams. Say which on the enquiry, because it changes the seam finish both factories quote.

What weight of melton does a duffle coat need?

Usually 600 to 850 GSM for a full length coat. The weight is what lets it be worn without a jacket and stops the toggles pulling the front out of shape. A lighter melton suits a short duffle, but on a long coat it lets the toggle row sag and the hood collapse.
