The round neck is the default T-shirt: crew necks for men's basics and uniforms, softer scoops for women's tees, and small necks with lapped shoulders for babies. Because the body is so plain, the neckline is the first thing a customer judges and often the first thing to fail. A round neck T-shirt manufacturer in Bangladesh needs a neck specification as clear as the fabric one, and this page sets out what to write.
Garments Hub BD puts your neck measurements and rib details on the enquiry, so both quotes price the same build: rib type, elastane content, tape and stitch. At fit sample stage the neck is measured relaxed and stretched, and inline inspection checks neck width and drop on the first sewn pieces before the line runs on.
Kinds of round neck T-shirt
Classic crew neck
Sits close at the base of the throat with a 1x1 rib, usually 1.5 to 2.5 cm wide. The standard for men's basics, uniforms and merchandise, where a high, firm neckline reads as tidy.
Scoop neck
A wider, lower round neck with a deeper front drop, finished with a narrow rib or binding. Common on women's tees; the wide opening needs a firm rib or it gapes away from the body.
Bound neck
No rib: a strip of body fabric folded over the raw edge and cover stitched. Clean and flat for fashion tees and fine jersey, but it stretches less, so the opening is cut larger.
Lapped shoulder neck
Overlapping shoulder panels, sometimes with snaps, let a small neck open wide enough for a baby's head. Used on baby and toddler sizes, where a plain rib cannot stretch far enough.
Ringer neck
A crew with contrast rib at the neck and sleeve hems. The rib is dyed separately, so a dark rib bleeding into a light body is the risk to test for.
How to specify a round neck
- Neck width
- Measure seam to seam across the top of the neck. On an adult men's crew it is usually 16 to 19 cm; women's scoops run wider.
- Front and back neck drop
- Measure each from the high point shoulder to the neck seam. Front drop on an adult crew is usually 8 to 10 cm, back drop usually 1.5 to 2.5 cm.
- Rib and elastane
- Name the rib, its finished width and fibre. Cotton rib with about 3 to 5 percent elastane springs back after stretching; plain cotton rib slowly opens up.
- Rib length against the opening
- The rib is cut shorter than the neckline it is sewn to, usually about 80 to 90 percent of it, so it pulls in and lies flat.
- Back neck tape
- Say whether a self fabric or woven tape covers the back neck seam from shoulder to shoulder. It hides the overlock and stops the back neck stretching.
- Minimum stretched opening
- For children's sizes, state the minimum circumference the neck must stretch to, measured on a cone, so it passes the head of a child at the top of the size.
Tests a round neck T-shirt manufacturer in Bangladesh should pass
- ISO 5077 with ISO 6330
- Measure the neck rib and the body separately after washing. A rib that shrinks more than the body puckers the neckline; one that shrinks less makes it wave.
- ISO 105-C06
- Wash fastness with staining onto adjacent fabric. Vital on ringer tees and contrast ribs, where a dark rib can mark a white body in the first wash.
- US CPSIA
- For children's tees sold in the US: lead limits on accessible parts, which on a tee means snaps and printed labels, plus a tracking label and a Children's Product Certificate.
- REACH Annex XVII
- Entry 27 limits nickel release from metal in direct and prolonged skin contact to 0.5 micrograms per square centimetre per week. It covers snaps on baby necks sold in the EU.
What moves the price of a round neck T-shirt
- Elastane in the rib costs more than plain cotton rib and is knitted as its own item.
- A contrast or separately dyed rib adds a dye lot and a shade approval.
- Back neck tape from shoulder to shoulder is an extra operation on every piece.
- Lapped necks and snaps on baby sizes add cutting, sewing and a metal trim test.
Lead time for round neck T-shirts
Neck rib is usually knitted alongside the body fabric and dyed in the same lot, so a matching rib adds little time. A contrast rib in its own colour needs a separate lab dip and dye lot, and an elastane rib may come from a specialist knitter, which adds days. Children's tees for the US add third party testing of snaps and printed labels before shipment. These steps are dated on your quote.
What we check on round neck T-shirts before shipment
- Neck stretch and recoveryThe neck is stretched on a cone to the agreed opening, released, and measured again after a short rest to confirm it returns.
- Width and drop per sizeNeck width and front drop are measured on every size, since a grading error shows first at the neck.
- Rib join positionThe rib seam sits where specified, usually the left shoulder or centre back, and lies flat without a lump.
- Cover stitch round the neckThe twin needle stitch is checked for skipped stitches, broken thread and a twisted rib.
Questions buyers ask about round neck T-shirts
What neck width and drop should a men's crew T-shirt have?
As a starting point, an adult men's crew usually measures 16 to 19 cm seam to seam, with a front drop of 8 to 10 cm and a back drop of 1.5 to 2.5 cm from the high point shoulder. Grade them through the sizes, or send a tee you like for the factories to measure.
Why does the neck go wavy after washing?
Usually because the rib and the body shrank by different amounts, or the rib was cut too long and stretched as it was sewn. Matched shrinkage, a rib cut shorter than the opening and a little elastane all help. Test rib and body separately on the bulk fabric before cutting.
Does the neck rib need elastane?
Not always, but it helps. A plain cotton rib opens a little with every pull over the head and does not come back. A few percent elastane lets it recover. It costs slightly more and is worth it on basics that are washed and worn often.
How do I make sure a children's tee fits over the head?
Give a minimum stretched neck opening for each size and have it checked on a cone at fit sample stage. For babies, a lapped neck or shoulder snaps solve the problem. If snaps are used on tees sold in the US or EU, add lead and nickel testing to the plan.
