A school jumper is knitted to shape rather than cut from cloth, washed hot by parents, dried on a radiator and worn over a shirt for most of the school year. Uniform suppliers and schoolwear retailers buy V necks for secondary lists, and crew necks and cardigans for primary. A buyer choosing a school jumper manufacturer in Bangladesh needs a knit that keeps its size and does not pill by half term.
Garments Hub BD sends the jumper spec to two bench factories that knit uniform programmes on flat knitting machines, and the two quotes come back on one sheet with yarn, gauge and badge method stated, so a lighter knit cannot hide inside a lower price. Inline inspection during knitting and linking checks the tipping stripes and the neck.
Kinds of school jumper
V neck jumpers
The secondary school staple, worn over a shirt and tie, with the neck depth set to show the tie knot and one or two stripes of tipping at the neck in school colours.
Crew neck jumpers
A round neck for primary pupils and schools without a tie. Easier for a small child to pull on, and often plain or with a single tipping stripe.
Cardigans
Button front in crew or V neck, for the girls' programme or a unisex primary list. Adds a placket, buttonholes and buttons, and so a button security check.
Sleeveless slipovers
A V neck tank worn over a shirt, for sixth form lists or the summer term. Less yarn per piece, with the same tipping and badge as the jumper.
Cotton acrylic jumpers
A softer, cooler blend for primary ages and heated classrooms. Washes well, feels closer to cotton, and pills differently from full acrylic.
What a school jumper manufacturer in Bangladesh needs from you
- Yarn and blend
- Full acrylic, or cotton acrylic with the ratio stated, such as 30/70 or 50/50. Ask for an anti-pill acrylic where pilling has been the complaint on earlier orders.
- Gauge and weight
- Typically 7 to 12 gauge, plus a finished weight per size, which shows whether the knit was loosened to save yarn.
- Neck, cuffs and hem
- Crew or V, neck depth, rib type and depth, usually 1x1 or 2x2. A linked neck lies flatter than one overlocked on.
- Tipping
- Number of stripes, their width, colour order and position at the neck, cuffs and hem, with a yarn shade reference for each school colour.
- Badge
- Direct embroidery on the chest or a woven badge sewn on, with the badge size, stitch count and its position from the shoulder and centre front.
- Shrinkage
- Panels relaxed and steamed before linking, and the shrinkage the buyer accepts in length and width after a 40 °C wash.
- Cardigan trims
- Button type and size, buttonhole spacing, and a placket tape so the front does not stretch out of line.
Tests and certificates for school jumpers
- ISO 12945-1
- The pilling box method suits a knitted school jumper. Acrylic pills where the sleeve rubs the body; ask for the grade on the 1 to 5 scale after the stated cycles.
- ISO 5077 with ISO 6330
- Dimensional change after washing. A jumper can shrink in length and grow in width in the same wash, so ask for both figures.
- ISO 13938
- Bursting strength of the knit, which matters at the elbows of a jumper worn leaning on a desk all day.
- Textile Fiber Products Identification Act and Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011
- They set how acrylic and cotton are named and declared on the label in the US and the EU, so test the blend before the labels are printed.
What moves the price of a school jumper
- Yarn: anti-pill acrylic and cotton acrylic for a school jumper cost more per kilo than standard acrylic.
- Gauge: a finer knit takes longer on the machine for every jumper.
- Tipping stripes, which add yarn changes and set-up time on each panel.
- Badge: direct embroidery priced by stitch count, or a woven badge sewn on.
- Cardigans against jumpers: a placket, buttonholes and buttons add steps.
Lead time for school jumpers
A school jumper usually takes 7 to 14 days to sample and 30 to 60 days in bulk after the pre-production sample is approved. Yarn dyed to a school colour adds a dyeing round before knitting, and tipping in two or three colours needs every shade ready at once. Badge embroidery is a further step after linking. The quote confirms the jumper dates colour by colour.
What we check on school jumpers before shipment
- Tipping stripe positionStripe width and spacing measured at neck, cuff and hem, with colours in the order shown on the approved sample.
- Size after relaxingChest, length and sleeve measured on jumpers taken from cartons, plus one bulk jumper washed and measured against tolerance.
- Linking and neck stretchNeck stretched over a gauge without cracking the linking stitch; dropped stitches and holes at the shoulder join rejected.
- Badge embroideryBadge position and size against the drawing, no puckering on the knit, and the backing trimmed close inside.
Questions buyers ask about school jumpers
Will an acrylic school jumper shrink in a hot wash?
Acrylic does not felt the way wool does, so it washes at 40 °C with little shrinkage if the panels were relaxed before linking. Heat is the bigger risk: a hot tumble dryer or iron can stretch acrylic out of shape for good, so the care label should say so.
Is cotton acrylic or full acrylic right for a primary school jumper?
Cotton acrylic feels softer and cooler, which suits young children in heated classrooms. Full acrylic costs less, keeps a brighter school colour and dries faster. Both blends pill, and anti-pill acrylic reduces it, so ask for a pilling grade on whichever you choose.
Can the girls' cardigan be quoted with the jumper on one order?
Yes. The cardigan and jumper usually share yarn and tipping, so both can be knitted from one dye lot and the school colour stays identical. Each is its own style on the quote, with a size curve and a minimum per colour confirmed by the factory.
How should the badge go on a knitted school jumper?
Direct embroidery is neat and permanent but needs a backing so the knit does not pucker, and a stitch count the gauge can carry. A woven badge sewn on costs less on small runs and lets one blank jumper serve several schools.
