Seam sealed jackets, your specification

Made to your tech pack, fabric and colours by a factory matched to the order.

Private label

Your main label, care label, hangtag and polybag. Nominated trims accepted.

A seam sealed jacket has tape bonded over its seams on the inside, so the needle holes do not let rain through. Taping is what turns waterproof cloth into a waterproof jacket. Outdoor, cycling, workwear and fashion rainwear brands order them. A seam sealed jacket manufacturer in Bangladesh needs hot air taping machines, operators who can tape curves and a way to test the seams, and not every outerwear factory has all three.

Both factories quote on the same cloth, tape and taping plan, so their prices cover the same metres of tape. Name a hydrostatic head test across a taped seam on the quote form and it is built into the timeline, with the result read on a taped PP sample before bulk.

Kinds of seam sealed jacket

2 layer taped jackets

Face fabric with a coating or membrane on the back, protected by a hanging mesh or taffeta lining. Comfortable and economical; the lining adds weight and covers the tape.

2.5 layer taped jackets

A membrane with a thin printed or sprayed protective layer inside in place of a lining. Light and packable; takes narrow tape and suits running and cycling shells.

3 layer taped jackets

Face, membrane and a knitted backer laminated as one cloth. More durable for mountain, ski and work shells, and taped with a tape that has its own textile backing.

Critically taped jackets

Only the seams most exposed to rain are taped: shoulders, hood, yoke and upper sleeves. Quicker and cheaper, for fashion rainwear that makes a modest claim.

Welded jackets

Some seams bonded with film and no stitching at all, sometimes taped over as well. Clean and light, but it needs bonding presses and careful set up.

How to brief a seam sealed jacket manufacturer in Bangladesh

Cloth and layer
State the layer build and the hydrostatic head of the cloth. Outdoor shells usually start at 10,000 mm; fashion rainwear often sits lower.
Tape
Choose tape made for the cloth: 2 layer, 2.5 layer or 3 layer tape, usually 13 to 22 mm wide. Narrow tape is lighter but leaves less margin on curves.
Taping scope
Say fully or critically taped and list the seams. On a waterproof claim, tape every seam that breaks the dry layer, pocket bags and hood adjusters included.
Seam construction
Ask for plain seams with trimmed allowances pressed flat under the tape. Bulky or overlocked seams leave channels the tape cannot seal.
Zips and openings
Specify water resistant zips or storm flaps, and how pocket openings and vents are sealed. Perfect seams still leak at a poorly chosen zip.
Test plan
Name the hydrostatic head target for fabric and seams, the wash cycles before retesting and who tests. Fix this before the PP sample.

Seam and water tests for seam sealed jackets

ISO 811
Hydrostatic head. Test the fabric and a specimen cut across a taped seam; a seam that leaks well below the fabric points to tape, heat or pressure settings.
EN 343
The EU rain protection standard for protective clothing, which classes a jacket 1 to 4 on water penetration and 1 to 4 on water vapour resistance. Seams are tested as well as fabric, so taping quality decides the class.
ISO 6330
The domestic washing procedure. Wash taped jackets for the agreed cycles and retest the seams, since tape that passes new can lift after a few washes.

What moves the price of a seam sealed jacket

  • Metres of tape per jacket: a fully taped hooded shell uses far more than a critically taped one.
  • Tape type: 3 layer tape costs more than 2 layer tape.
  • Panel count, since every extra panel adds seams to sew and tape.
  • Cloth layer: 3 layer laminates cost more per metre than coated 2 layer cloth.
  • Seam and water testing, plus any welded pockets or zip openings.

Lead time for seam sealed jackets

A taped sample usually takes 7 to 14 days, at the long end, because taping follows sewing and the machine settings are tuned to each cloth. Bulk usually runs 30 to 60 days after PP approval, with taping as a step of its own after sewing; a fully taped hooded jacket spends more days there than a critically taped one. Seam tests after washing add days before the PP sample is approved. The quote confirms the dates.

What we check on seam sealed jackets before shipment

  • Tape at curves and crossingsHood, armhole and seam crossings checked for lifting edges, wrinkles and gaps where tapes overlap.
  • Heat marksThe face fabric over each taped seam checked for shine, glue bleed and puckering from too much heat or pressure.
  • Leak test on finished jacketsJackets from bulk sprayed or pressure tested at the seams, looking for damp on the inside before packing.
  • Tape after washingA washed jacket from bulk checked for tape lifting at the ends, corners and cuffs.

Questions buyers ask about seam sealed jackets

Fully taped or critically taped?

Fully taped for any jacket sold as waterproof for outdoor or work use: every seam that breaks the dry layer is sealed. Critically taped covers shoulders, hood and yoke, the seams rain hits most, and suits fashion rainwear with a modest claim. Say on the tag which it is.

Does every jacket factory tape seams?

No. Taping needs hot air taping machines, operators trained on curves and a way to test seams. Some factories send taping out to a subcontractor, which adds handling and transport time. Ask where taping is done and look at taped seams from current work before sampling.

What should a taped seam hold?

An agreed minimum in millimetres, new and after washing, which usually sits below the fabric's own figure. A seam far below the fabric points to poor tape adhesion or wrong machine settings. Buyers write the seam target into the spec and test it to ISO 811 on specimens cut from finished jackets.

Will the tape peel after washing?

Not if the tape suits the cloth and the machine settings are right. Peeling at tape ends, cuffs and hems is the usual first failure. Wash test taped jackets before bulk, round the tape ends, and keep tumble drying warm rather than hot on the care label.
