Kinds of sports underwear
Sport trunks with a longer leg
A trunk or boxer brief with a leg long enough to stay put under running or training shorts, often with a silicone gripper inside the hem. Mesh panels at the sides or seat are common.
Support briefs
Men's briefs with a double layer or slung internal pouch for running and court sports. The pouch pattern is the fit point, so sample it on a form before grading.
Women's sport briefs and hipsters
Brief or hipster cuts in a smooth wicking knit with bonded or laser cut leg edges, so no seam shows under tights. Many performance ranges replace the cotton gusset with a wicking one.
Mesh and lightweight styles
Open mesh bodies or panels in a lighter knit for heat and long distance, where airflow matters more than opacity.
How to brief a sports underwear manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Fibre and weight
- Micro polyester elastane, usually 140 to 180 GSM, or nylon elastane, usually 160 to 220 GSM, with 8 to 15 percent elastane. Nylon feels softer; polyester dries faster and costs less.
- Seam type
- Four needle, six thread flatlock for flat seams, or bonded seams with tape. Mark which seams are flatlock and which may stay overlocked.
- Wicking and drying claims
- Write the exact claim, the test method and the result you expect. A finish applied to the fabric needs a wash count before testing, so the claim holds past the first wash.
- Odour control finish
- If you want an antimicrobial finish, name the chemistry you accept and the lab method your market expects. Without a report it does not go on a hangtag.
- Leg gripper
- Silicone print or gripper tape inside the leg hem, with its width and pattern, or no gripper for sensitive skin ranges.
- Waistband
- Soft brushed or knitted elastic, its width, and whether the logo is jacquard or printed. Stiff woven bands rub under a running belt.
Tests for sports underwear claims
- AATCC 195
- Shows how fast an underwear fabric takes up sweat, spreads it and lets it dry, which is the evidence behind a wicking claim on the hangtag.
- AATCC 197
- Measures how high sweat climbs up a strip of the trunk or brief fabric over time. A simpler check than AATCC 195 when comparing two fabrics at the quote stage.
- ISO 12947
- Martindale abrasion. The inner thigh is where sports underwear wears through first, so set a cycle count for the body fabric.
- ISO 105-E04
- Perspiration fastness, graded 1 to 5. Dark sports shades must not stain the gusset or a lighter waistband when soaked with sweat.
What moves the price of sports underwear
- Fibre and finish: nylon elastane with a wicking finish costs more than plain micro polyester.
- Flatlock seams, which run slower than overlock and need a dedicated machine.
- Bonded hems and laser cut legs, which need bonding equipment and add steps.
- Mesh panels and support pouch pieces, each adding cutting and sewing operations.
- Lab tests for each claim on the hangtag, quoted per fabric and colour group.
Lead time for sports underwear
Sports underwear usually samples in 7 to 14 days, with bulk typically 30 to 60 days after PP approval. A wicking or odour control finish applied at the mill adds days to fabric delivery, and lab testing of claims adds more when the report must arrive before shipment. Recycled polyester can take longer to source than virgin yarn. The quote confirms the dates.

- Fabric faceThe wicking face of the fabric sits on the side the spec says, checked against the swatch on every cutting lot.
- Gripper adhesionSilicone gripper holds after a wash and a stretch, with no peeling at the ends of the hem.
- Pouch layersPouch layers are cut on grain and sewn without twisting, checked on pieces from each line.
Questions buyers ask about sports underwear
Can we put an antimicrobial claim on the label?
Only with a lab report to a method your market accepts, run on the finished fabric after the number of washes you claim. The finish chemistry also has to pass your restricted substances review. Many brands use wording such as fast drying instead, which a wicking test can support.
Polyester or nylon for sports underwear?
Micro polyester dries faster, takes sublimation prints and costs less. Nylon elastane is softer, cooler to the touch and stands up better to rubbing, at a higher price. Many ranges use polyester for training styles and nylon for running.
Do flatlock seams add much to the price?
They add some. A flatlock machine runs slower than an overlocker and fewer operators are trained on it. On sports underwear it is usually worth it at the inner leg and side seams. Bonded seams cost more again but leave the flattest edge.
What leg length suits running trunks?
Longer than a fashion trunk, so the leg stays put under shorts; many running trunks sit near boxer brief length, with a gripper inside the hem. If the range is new, sample two lengths at proto stage and choose after a wear trial.
