Cropped overalls stop at the ankle or mid calf, often with a turn up, and the crop length is the design. A few centimetres decide whether they read as cropped or simply short in the leg, so the inseam has to be a number rather than a word. Fashion buyers use them in spring and summer ranges. A cropped overalls manufacturer in Bangladesh has to hold inseam, turn up depth and hem balance through the wash.
The desk sends your cropped brief to two factories on the bench and confirms both quoted the same inseam, turn up depth and wash order, since a turn up sewn before washing gives a worn fold line and one sewn after gives a crisp one. That choice is fixed at the sample, not discovered in bulk.
Kinds of cropped overalls
Ankle length
The hem lands at the ankle bone, with an inseam a few centimetres short of full length. Straight or slightly tapered, worn with trainers or flats.
Mid calf culotte overalls
A wide leg cropped to mid calf, falling like a culotte. It needs some weight in the denim so the short, wide leg does not flare out.
Turn up cropped
A single or double turn up, tacked at the seams. The leg pattern is extended and shaped at the hem so the turn up lies flat against the leg.
Tapered cropped
Narrowing to a slim ankle opening, often in 10 to 11 oz denim with a little elastane. The opening must still pass over the heel.
Split hem cropped
Short slits at the outer hem that open over the ankle bone. Each slit is faced on the inside and bar tacked at the top.
How to brief a cropped overalls manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Inseam in centimetres
- Usually 64 to 70 cm for ankle length and 52 to 60 cm for mid calf on a mid size, measured after washing.
- Turn up depth
- Depth per turn, usually 3 to 6 cm, single or double, and the tack positions at side seam and inseam.
- Length grading
- Whether the inseam grades with size or stays fixed. A fixed crop lands higher on a taller wearer.
- Wash order
- Turn up sewn before washing for a worn fold line, or after for a clean one. State which on the sample approval.
- Leg opening
- Measured flat. Tapered crops must clear the heel, and culotte crops need an opening wide enough to swing.
- Hem stitching
- Chainstitch or lockstitch, thread colour and stitch length, since a turn up shows the hem stitching on the outside.
Tests for cropped overalls
- ISO 5077 with ISO 6330
- Dimensional change in washing. On a 66 cm inseam, 3 percent shrinkage removes 2 cm, which lifts a crop from the ankle to above it.
- AATCC 150
- Garment shrinkage for US buyers, run on the washed overall with the turn up let down so the true inseam is measured.
- EU REACH Annex XVII, entry 27
- Nickel release from clasps, bib buttons and rivet backs in prolonged skin contact, held to 0.5 micrograms per square centimetre per week.
What moves the price of cropped overalls
- An extended, shaped hem for the turn up, which uses more denim than a plain hem.
- Turn up tacks at two seams on each leg, sewn by hand or bar tack.
- Split hems with facings and bar tacks at each slit.
- Two crop lengths, each with its own pattern and marker.
- Washing with turn ups in place for a worn fold line, which needs pressing before and after.
Lead time for cropped overalls
Expect a sample in 7 to 14 days and bulk in 30 to 60 days after the PP sample is approved. Where the turn up is washed in, a wash trial on full garments comes first to check the fold line, which adds days. A second crop length means a second fit check. Dates are confirmed in the quote.
What we check on cropped overalls before shipment
- Inseam both legsInseam equal on both legs and to spec after washing, measured with the turn up both down and up.
- Turn up depth and tacksTurn ups even in depth round each leg, matching on both legs, and tacked firmly at both seams.
- Fold lineThe fold line worn or crisp as approved on the sample, and the same across the whole lot.
- Turn up balanceInner and outer depth equal, so the turn up does not tilt or flip as the wearer walks.
Questions buyers ask about cropped overalls
What inseam should cropped overalls have?
For an ankle crop, usually 64 to 70 cm on a mid size; for mid calf, 52 to 60 cm. Fit the base size on a body of your customer's height and set the number from that, measured after washing, then decide how it grades.
Should the turn up be sewn before or after washing?
Before, for a worn, slightly paler fold line that looks lived in. After, for a crisp clean fold. Decide on the sample and write it on the approval, because the two look clearly different and cannot be switched once bulk is cut and washed.
Can customers turn the cuff down for a full length?
Only by the depth of the turn up, a few centimetres. A cropped overall is cut short; it is not a full length overall folded up, and the shaped hem shows if let down. If you want both looks, order two lengths with their own patterns.
Does the crop length change by size?
That is your choice. Grading the inseam by about 1 cm a size keeps the hem at the same point on the leg. A fixed inseam is simpler to cut and check, but lands higher on taller wearers in the larger sizes.
