A down liner is a thin down layer built to zip or fasten inside an outer shell, turning a rain jacket into a winter jacket. Sold together, the pair makes a 3 in 1 jacket: shell alone, liner alone, or both. A down liner manufacturer in Bangladesh has to match the zip system, the length and the sleeves to the outer exactly, which is why liners are usually developed and quoted with their shell.
Garments Hub BD quotes a liner as a pair with its outer: both go to two factories on the bench together, and your tech pack for both garments is used for that order only. If your shell is already made elsewhere, send a production shell with the enquiry so the liner can be matched to it.
Kinds of down liner
Wearable zip-in jacket
A finished down jacket with its own front zip and a second zip that joins the shell. Sold in a 3 in 1 that can be worn three ways.
Zip-in vest liner
A sleeveless liner for the shell's body. Cheaper, and easier to match because there are no sleeves to align.
Loop and snap liner
Held by loops and snaps at collar, front and cuffs instead of a zip. Simpler to match and cheaper, but less secure in wear.
Non-wearable liner
Built only to sit inside the shell, with a plain face and no pockets. The lowest cost choice where the liner never shows.
How to specify a down liner
- Zip system
- Zip type, gauge and length, and which side carries which half, matched to the shell. Send the shell's zip spec or a physical shell.
- Fill weight
- Liners are thin, usually 30 to 60 grams in an adult medium, so the pair fits together without bunching.
- Length and sleeves
- Liner body and sleeves slightly shorter than the shell so they never show at hem or cuffs.
- Attachment points
- Snaps or loops at cuffs and collar, which stop the liner sleeves pulling out with the arm.
- Liner face
- Finished to be worn alone, with pockets and a collar, or plain.
- Pairing and packing
- Size each liner to the shell size it fits, and state whether liners and shells are packed together or apart.
Tests a down liner manufacturer in Bangladesh should run
- ISO 105-X12
- Colour fastness to rubbing. The liner rubs against the shell lining on every wear, so a dark liner must not mark a pale lining.
- ISO 5077 with ISO 6330
- Dimensional change after washing. If the liner shrinks more than the shell, the two zip halves stop lining up.
- GRS (Global Recycled Standard)
- Covers recycled content, such as recycled down in liners. It is being replaced by Textile Exchange's Materials Matter Standard, so confirm the certificate is current.
What moves the price of a down liner
- A zip system matched to the shell, often a nominated zip in a set gauge.
- Wearable finish: pockets, collar and front zip on a liner worn alone.
- Fill weight and fill power, lower than a jacket but still the main cost.
- Snaps, loops and cuff tabs that tie the liner to the shell.
- Recycled or RDS certified down, and the paperwork it needs.
Lead time for down liners
Liners sample in 7 to 14 days, but only once the shell's zip and measurements are fixed, so sample the pair together. Liner bulk takes 30 to 60 days after the PP sample is approved. Matching the zip of a shell made at another factory can add days, and a wash test on liner and shell together adds a few more.
What we check on down liners before shipment
- Zip-in testEach sampled liner zipped into a shell from the matched production, along its full length, without forcing.
- Liner length and sleevesLiner hem and sleeves checked inside the shell so neither shows at the hem or cuffs.
- Cuff and collar fasteningsSnaps and loops at cuffs and collar line up with their partners inside the shell.
- Pair labellingLiner and shell labelled with matching style and size, so a store cannot pair the wrong ones.
Questions buyers ask about down liners
Can you make a liner for a shell made elsewhere?
Yes, if the zip and fastenings can be matched. Send a production shell, not only the tech pack, so the factory can read the zip gauge, length and position. A zip from a nominated supplier may need ordering from that same source.
Should the liner be wearable on its own?
If it adds to the sale. A wearable liner needs a finished face, a front zip and pockets, which cost more but turn the 3 in 1 into three usable jackets. A plain liner is cheaper where the customer only wants warmth.
Down or synthetic fill for a liner?
Down is warmer for its weight and sits thinner inside a shell. Synthetic wadding copes better if the shell leaks and costs less. For a 3 in 1 sold on lightness, down; for a budget range, wadding.
Can the liner and shell be quoted together?
Yes, and they should be. Quoting the pair lets the factory plan zips, sizes and packing as one job. Splitting them across factories risks a liner that does not fit its shell.
