Knitted hoodies sit between a jumper and a sweatshirt: the hood and kangaroo pocket of a hoodie in a sweater yarn. Knitwear brands, lifestyle labels and children's ranges buy them for autumn and winter. A knitted hoodie manufacturer in Bangladesh is a sweater factory with flat knitting and linking machines, a different plant and a different price structure from the cut and sew units that make fleece hoodies.
Garments Hub BD sends a knitted hoodie enquiry to sweater factories rather than fleece units, and asks both to quote the same hood build, pocket and gauge. The proto sample settles the hood shape, because a knitted hood is shaped on the machine and hard to alter later. Inline inspection follows the linking of hood to neck.
Kinds of knitted hoodie
Single layer fashioned hood
Hood panels shaped on the machine by narrowing and widening, with a rib or tubular edge round the face. Light and clean; the inside of the hood shows the reverse of the knit.
Double layer hood
A knitted outer hood with a knitted or jersey lining joined at the face edge. Warmer and neater inside because it hides the linking seams, but it adds yarn, panels and an operation.
Chunky knit hoodie
Usually 3 to 5 gauge in a wool blend or acrylic, as a heavy outer layer. The hood stands up well from its own weight, but cord eyelets need reinforcing in the open knit.
Fine gauge layering hoodie
12 gauge in cotton, merino or a soft blend, worn under a jacket. Light and close, often with a slim hood and no drawcord.
Children's knitted hoodie
Made without hood drawcords to meet the rules on cords in children's clothing, with a roomier face opening and a softer yarn.
How to specify a knitted hoodie
- Gauge and yarn
- Cotton acrylic is the common volume yarn, wool blends add warmth. Usually 5 to 7 gauge for a casual knitted hoodie and 12 for a fine one.
- Hood construction
- Two panels with a centre back seam, or three with a centre strip. State hood height, width and face opening, single or double layer.
- Hood to neck join
- Ask for the hood to be linked stitch for stitch to the neck, so the join is flat and stretches with the knit. Overlocking is cheaper but bulky.
- Kangaroo pocket
- Knitted as a separate panel and linked or sewn on, with rib or tubular edges at the hand openings and firm tacks at the top corners.
- Drawcord and eyelets
- Knitted or woven cord, its length and how it is fixed at centre back. Metal eyelets need a backing in the knit; knitted eyelets avoid metal.
- Weight per piece
- Give a target weight per size; the hood and pocket add yarn over a crew neck in the same knit.
Safety and wear tests for knitted hoodies
- EN 14682
- Cords on a hooded knit for children sold in the EU are governed by this standard. It restricts drawstrings in the hood and neck area, so plan children's hoodies without them.
- REACH Annex XVII
- Entry 27 caps nickel release from metal in direct and prolonged skin contact at 0.5 micrograms per square centimetre per week. Check metal eyelets and cord tips for the EU.
- ISO 12945-1
- Pilling box test. Hands in the pocket and arms against the body rub the pocket mouth and cuffs, so set a pilling grade for the yarn, above all cotton acrylic.
What moves the price at a knitted hoodie manufacturer in Bangladesh
- The hood and pocket add panels, yarn and linking time compared with a crew neck sweater.
- A double layer hood close to doubles the yarn in the hood and adds an operation.
- Stitch for stitch linking of hood to neck costs more than overlocking but lies flatter.
- Metal eyelets, cord tips and woven cords add trim cost and a nickel test for the EU.
- Chunky gauges use more yarn per piece; fine gauges take longer to knit.
Lead time for knitted hoodies
Yarn booking and dyeing set the start, as with any sweater. The hood adds knitting and linking time per piece, and a new hood shape often takes more than one proto round to get right, which adds days before the fit sample. Children's styles for the EU or US may need test reports on metal trims. The quote dates the yarn, sample rounds and knitting.
What we check on knitted hoodies before shipment
- Hood linkingThe hood to neck linking is checked for dropped loops, a straight line and even stretch round the neck.
- Hood measurementsHood height, width and face opening are measured on each size, since a shallow hood will not cover the head.
- Pocket placementThe pocket is checked for level placement, matching openings and firm tacks at the corners, where hands pull.
- Cords and eyeletsCords are measured and fixed at centre back, eyelets checked for a backing that holds, and children's styles for no hood cord at all.
Questions buyers ask about knitted hoodies
How is a knitted hoodie different from a fleece hoodie?
A knitted hoodie is a sweater: panels are knitted to shape on flat machines and linked. A fleece hoodie is cut from brushed knitted fabric and sewn. They come from different factories, use different yarns and are priced differently, the knitted one by yarn weight and knitting time.
Can a children's knitted hoodie have a drawcord?
For the EU, EN 14682 restricts drawstrings in the hood and neck area of children's clothing, so the safe choice is none. Many brands apply the same rule in every market to keep one specification. A well shaped hood sits properly without a cord.
Can a logo go on a knitted hoodie?
Usually it is knitted in, as jacquard or intarsia, or embroidered after linking. Screen printing on a sweater knit is uncommon because the surface is uneven and the stitches open under the ink. A knitted logo is set in the machine file, so approve it on the proto sample.
Which gauge suits a knitted hoodie?
5 or 7 gauge for the casual, chunky look most buyers want, in cotton acrylic or a wool blend, and 12 gauge for a fine layering hoodie. Lower gauges use more yarn per piece but knit faster; finer gauges are lighter and take longer on the machine.
