A padded jacket carries its warmth in polyester wadding, or polyfill, held between shell and lining by lines of quilting. It is the volume jacket of a winter range: washable at home, light to ship and usually cheaper than down for a similar look. A padded jacket manufacturer in Bangladesh often quilts in one unit and sews in another, and the price follows that split.

Garments Hub BD briefs both quoting factories on the same wadding weight, quilting pattern and shell, and asks each to state whether quilting is done in house or by an outside padding unit. If it is outside, inline inspection starts with the quilted panels as they reach the sewing line.

Kinds of padded jacket

Sewn through channel jacket

Shell, wadding and lining stitched together in parallel channels. The quickest and lowest cost build, and the usual high street look. Each quilting line is a thin, cooler seam, which matters more in hard cold than at moderate weights.

Box and diamond quilted jacket

Lines crossing in squares or diamonds hold the wadding in both directions, so it cannot slide down a long panel. Common on country and women's styles, with more stitching and a pattern that must meet at seams.

Baffled cluster fill jacket

Light fabric walls form chambers blown full of loose polyester fibre, the build often sold as faux down. No stitch line passes through shell and lining, so the outer stays smooth. It needs a fillproof shell and a blowing machine.

Lightweight padded jacket

Thin wadding, usually 40 to 80 GSM, behind a 20 denier nylon shell, sometimes packable into its own pocket. A spring and autumn layer that carries the padded look into milder months.

Waterproof padded jacket

A coated or laminated outer with taped seams hangs free over a separately quilted lining, so no quilting needle holes pierce the waterproof layer. Heavier and dearer, and the padded build that can carry a waterproof claim, since quilting lines pierce any other outer.

Hooded jacket and matching vest

The same body pattern with a wadded hood, fixed or zip off, and as a sleeveless vest. Quoted together, both share one shell dye lot and one wadding purchase, so the pair match.

Specifying for a padded jacket manufacturer in Bangladesh

Wadding weight by climate
Polyfill usually runs 60 to 80 GSM for a transitional jacket, 100 to 160 GSM for an average northern winter and 180 to 250 GSM for hard cold, often one step lighter in the sleeves.
Wadding type
Sheet polyfill, usually thermal bonded so the fibres hold together, or loose cluster fibre for baffled builds. Name any recycled content you will claim and the certificate behind it.
Quilting pattern and pitch
Channel, box or diamond, with line spacing in centimetres and stitch length. Mark where lines must meet across side seams, armholes and the centre front zip.
Quilting route
Pre quilted rolls are cut like flat cloth; panels quilted one by one after cutting put every line where you drew it. Rolls cost less, while panel quilting keeps lines matched at seams.
Shell fabric
From 20 denier nylon taffeta or ripstop to 240T polyester pongee, the T number counting yarns per square inch. State matte or shine and the repellent finish.
Lining and fillproofing
A smooth taffeta or brushed lining, and whether shell or lining must be fillproof. Fine wadding fibres work through loose weaves, and white fibres show most on dark shells.

Tests for padded jackets

EN 12127
Mass per unit area from small samples. Cut wadding from a finished panel and weigh it, so the GSM on the spec is the GSM inside the jacket, not the figure on the roll label.
ISO 811
Hydrostatic head, the water column a fabric holds before leaking. Test the outer of the waterproof version at the level you claim; a sewn through jacket has no basis for that claim.
GRS (Global Recycled Standard)
Recycled polyfill with social, environmental and chemical criteria, certified from 20 percent recycled content. GRS is moving to the Materials Matter Standard, so confirm the certificate is current when the order is placed.

What moves the price of a padded jacket

  • Wadding weight and type: heavier, recycled or cluster fill costs more per jacket than standard sheet polyfill.
  • Panel quilting with matched lines, against pre quilted rolls cut like flat cloth.
  • Shell: matte nylon, ripstop or a coated outer costs more than standard polyester pongee.
  • A free hanging waterproof outer, which adds a whole layer, seam taping and a separate lining build.

Lead time for padded jackets

Padded jacket samples usually take 7 to 14 days when shell and wadding are in stock, and bulk usually runs 30 to 60 days after written PP approval. Panel quilting at an outside unit, a shell dyed to your colour and seam taping on the waterproof version each add days. Winter quilting capacity books up early, and the quote confirms the dates.

What we check on padded jackets before shipment

  • Wadding weight by zoneWadding cut from body, sleeve and hood of a sampled jacket and weighed against the GSM given for each zone.
  • Skipped quilting stitchesQuilting lines followed along their length for skipped or loose stitches, which let the wadding drift once the jacket is worn.
  • Lines meeting at seamsChannels and boxes meet across side seams, armholes and the front zip within the agreed tolerance on every sampled size.
  • Loft after packingA packed carton opened and its jackets checked for loft recovery, since hard compression can leave padded jackets flat on arrival.

Questions buyers ask about padded jackets

How much polyfill does a padded jacket need for a cold winter?

For hard cold, usually 180 to 250 GSM in the body; for an average northern winter, 100 to 160 GSM; for spring and autumn, 60 to 80 GSM. Shell, fit and quilting change the warmth too, so judge the weight on a worn sample.

Can a padded jacket be fully waterproof?

Only if its outer layer is waterproof and unbroken. Quilting through a coated shell leaves rows of needle holes, so a waterproof padded jacket hangs a taped outer over a separately quilted lining. Test that outer for hydrostatic head; a sewn through jacket is water repellent at most.

Is the quilting done in the same factory as the sewing?

Sometimes. Many sewing plants buy pre quilted rolls, or send cut panels to a padding unit running multi needle or programmed quilting machines. Either route works if the quote names it, so wadding weight and line positions are checked when panels reach the sewing line.

Should the sleeves and hood carry the same wadding as the body?

Usually not. Sleeves often take wadding one step lighter than the body, since a full weight sleeve restricts the arm and adds bulk under a pack strap, and a hood takes a lighter weight again so it folds and drapes. State the weight for each zone, because the inspector weighs wadding cut from each one against your figure.
