A work jacket is the outer layer of a uniform, worn over a shirt or fleece through wind, rain or the chill of a cold store. Utilities, courier fleets, farms, frozen food distributors and workwear brands buy it. A work jacket manufacturer in Bangladesh is often asked for one shell in two or three builds, unlined for spring and lined or quilted for winter, so a single pattern covers the year.
The desk sends the jacket to two bench factories with each lining option listed separately, so the comparison sheet shows the price with and without lining and for each insulation weight. Coated shells are priced with seam taping as its own line. Inspection checks tape, zips and lining hang during sewing and again before packing.
Kinds of work jacket
Canvas chore jackets
Cotton duck canvas, usually 10 to 12 oz, with a cord or twill collar, patch pockets and a blanket or quilted lining for winter. For farm, timber and building trades.
Twill work jackets
Poly cotton twill with a waistband, zip front and rib or button cuffs, usually unlined. The jacket that completes a work shirt and trouser programme in the same colour.
Coated rain jackets
Polyester or nylon shell with a waterproof coating or laminated membrane and taped seams. When it is sold as protective clothing against rain in the EU, the finished jacket is tested to EN ISO 24232, the standard that replaced EN 343 in 2025.
Quilted cold store jackets
Shell quilted to polyester wadding, usually 150 to 300 GSM, with storm cuffs and a high collar. The wadding weight follows the store temperature and how long staff stay inside.
Hi-vis work jackets
Fluorescent shell with reflective bands round body and sleeves. With banded sleeves it can be tested for a higher class than a vest; quoted as its own design.
What to tell a work jacket manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Shell cloth
- Canvas in oz, twill in GSM, or a coated shell with its hydrostatic head in millimetres, plus colour and any water repellent finish.
- Lining and insulation
- Unlined, mesh, cotton, quilted or padded, with wadding weight. Ask for the price both ways, because lining adds cloth, wadding and a second layer of sewing.
- Cuffs and collar
- Rib knit cuffs, storm cuffs with an inner rib and outer tab, or button cuffs; a stand, shirt or cord collar; a detachable hood if needed.
- Pocket layout
- Chest, hand warmer, inside, phone and pen pockets, each with size, position and closure, plus radio loop or ID holder.
- Reflective trims
- Piping, sleeve bands or full hi-vis tape. Say whether it is decoration or a certified claim, since only a claim needs a tested design.
- Closure and hem
- Two way zip, stud fastened storm flap, hem drawcord or elastic, and a zip gauge heavy enough for the shell.
Tests and standards for work jackets
- EN ISO 24232, formerly EN 343
- Protective clothing against rain: water penetration and water vapour resistance each classed 1 to 4, seams tested as well as the shell cloth. It replaced EN 343 in 2025 with the same classes; EN 343 certificates run to expiry.
- ISO 811
- Hydrostatic head of the coated shell in millimetres. Ask for the bulk fabric result before cutting, since coating weight can drift between lots.
- ISO 4920
- Spray rating for the outer face. Useful on canvas and twill jackets finished to shed light rain without any coating.
- EN ISO 20471
- For the hi-vis jacket only. Decorative piping makes no class claim; a tested design with banded sleeves can.
What moves the price of a work jacket
- Lining and wadding: a quilted lining adds cloth, insulation and a second layer of sewing to each panel.
- Shell: coated and laminated fabrics cost more than canvas or twill and need seam taping.
- Seam taping, a machine stage plus inspection on every seam that must stay dry.
- Zips, storm flaps and cuff builds, especially heavy two way zips.
- Pocket count and reflective trims, each adding parts and operations.
Lead time for work jackets
An unlined twill or canvas jacket in a stock colour usually needs 30 to 60 days of bulk after PP approval, and 60 to 90 days is typical from order to shipment. Quilting, seam taping and hoods add operations, which puts lined and coated jackets toward the longer end. A rain protection or hi-vis test on a new design, asked for on the quote form, adds laboratory days, and winter ranges need that full time before the cold season starts.
What we check on work jackets before shipment
- Seam tape adhesionOn taped shells, tape is checked for lifting at seam crossings and ends, including after a wash on a sample.
- Lining hangThe lining lies flat inside the shell and neither drops below the hem nor pulls the sleeve short.
- Quilting and wadding spreadQuilt lines are even and wadding fills every channel, with no thin patches that leave cold spots.
- Zip and cuff functionEach sampled zip opens both ways without catching the storm flap, and rib cuffs recover after stretching.
Questions buyers ask about work jackets
Lined or unlined work jacket?
Unlined for mild weather and layering, lined for cold. Many buyers range both from one shell pattern, which keeps cutting and colour matching simple. The quote shows each version separately so the cost of the lining is clear before you decide.
How warm does a cold store jacket need to be?
It depends on the store temperature and time spent inside. Freezer rooms around minus 20 degrees with long shifts need heavier wadding, storm cuffs and a hood. A tested cold protection rating is a separate standard, measured by a laboratory, not read from the wadding weight.
Is a waterproof coating enough to call a jacket waterproof?
Not on its own. Water comes in through stitch holes, so seams must be taped and zips covered. To sell the jacket as protective clothing against rain in the EU, its materials and seams are tested and classed to EN ISO 24232, which replaced EN 343; without that, describe it as water resistant.
Will a canvas work jacket shrink?
Unwashed cotton canvas can shrink noticeably in its first wash, so buyers usually ask for preshrunk cloth or a garment washed jacket. State the shrinkage you accept on the specification and check it on a washed PP sample before bulk is cut.
