A chef coat is a kitchen jacket with a stand collar, a double breasted front that can be fastened either way to hide a spill, and long sleeves that guard the arms from heat and splashes. Hotel groups, restaurant chains and catering schools buy it in whites and house colours. A chef coat manufacturer in Bangladesh is asked for whites that stay white through hot washes, and coats that breathe beside a stove.

The desk sends the chef coat specification to two bench factories that sew woven uniforms, with fabric, fastening type and finish set out on the comparison sheet, since those decide how long a coat lasts in the laundry. A washed coat can be requested at PP stage, and inspection checks fastenings and whiteness before packing.

Kinds of chef coat

Double breasted cotton coats

Traditional whites in 100 percent cotton twill or drill, usually 180 to 220 GSM, with knotted cloth buttons or removable studs. Cooler to wear, but they shrink and crease more in hot washes.

Poly cotton chef coats

Usually 65/35 polyester and cotton, the standard for laundry contracts: it keeps its size and white longer and dries fast. Some chefs find it warmer next to the skin.

Mesh back chef coats

A polyester mesh panel across the upper back or under the arms lets heat out over the stove. The mesh needs bound or overlocked edges and ages differently from the body cloth.

Single breasted and stud front coats

Lighter, cheaper single breasted fronts for pastry sections, show kitchens and front of house staff. Press studs take hot washes and fasten quickly, even with wet hands.

Coloured and black chef coats

Black, grey or brand colours for open kitchens where guests see the team. These need colour fastness to hot washing and a plan for fading that whites never need.

Briefing a chef coat manufacturer in Bangladesh

Fabric, blend and weight
Cotton or poly cotton, twill or drill, and GSM. Say how coats are laundered, because hot contract laundry favours poly cotton.
Front and fastening
Double or single breasted; knotted cloth buttons, removable studs with retaining rings, or press studs. Removable fastenings come out before every wash.
Collar and sleeves
Stand collar height, long or three quarter sleeves, turn back cuffs, and the thermometer and pen pocket usually set on the left sleeve.
Ventilation
Mesh back or underarm panels and back or side vents, with mesh colour and position drawn on the tech pack.
Stain release finish
A soil release finish helps oil and sauce wash out; ask what it does to the hand and how many washes it lasts.
Logos and names
Embroidered logo position, plus a name per chef if needed, supplied as a list matched to sizes.

Tests for chef coats

ISO 15797
The right basis for coats that go through a hotel or contract laundry: ask for shrinkage and whiteness after the stated industrial wash and finish cycles.
ISO 5077 with ISO 6330
Dimensional change of cotton whites washed at home or on site. Set a shrinkage limit, usually within 3 percent, so sleeves and body length hold.
ISO 105-C06
Needed on coloured coats and on any contrast piping or collar, which can bleed onto a white body in a hot wash.

What moves the price of a chef coat

  • Cloth: cotton drill, poly cotton twill, or a finished cloth with stain release.
  • Fastenings: knotted cloth buttons and removable studs cost more than press studs.
  • Mesh panels and vents, adding cutting, binding and a second material.
  • Embroidery: logo stitch count, and individual names sorted by size.
  • Contrast piping or collars, which need extra parts and colour testing.

Lead time for chef coats

A double breasted white coat in stock poly cotton usually takes 30 to 60 days of bulk after the PP sample is signed, within a typical 60 to 90 days from order to shipment. Name embroidery adds days because every coat is different and has to be sorted by wearer. Stain release finishing and coloured cloth dyed for the order add mill time, and the quote lists both.

What we check on chef coats before shipment

  • Button and stud fixingKnotted buttons are sewn through both layers and studs seat firmly in their rings, since loose fastenings vanish in the laundry.
  • Front closes both waysOn reversible double breasted fronts, holes and buttons line up when closed left over right and right over left.
  • Mesh panel edgesMesh edges are bound or overlocked without fraying, and the panel lies flat without pulling the back cloth.
  • Washed coat against approvalA sample coat is washed and compared with the approved white and the size chart before bulk is packed.

Questions buyers ask about chef coats

Cotton or poly cotton for chef coats?

Cotton is cooler and many chefs prefer it, but it shrinks, creases and greys sooner in hot laundry. Poly cotton keeps its size and white longer and dries fast. Contract laundries often ask for poly cotton; individual chefs often choose cotton, so many ranges carry both.

Why are chef coats double breasted?

The two layers across the chest add a barrier against heat and splashes, and the front can be fastened the other way to hide a stain mid service. That needs holes and fastenings on both sides, which is part of the cost.

Can each coat carry a chef's name?

Yes. Send the names as a list matched to sizes. Name embroidery is priced per name and adds handling, because every coat is different and has to be packed for its own wearer, so allow a few extra days in the timeline.

Are knotted cloth buttons worth the cost?

They take hot washing and pressing without cracking or melting, and they look right on a traditional white. Removable studs do the same job and come out before laundry. Press studs are cheaper and quicker to fasten, but less traditional.
