Printed leggings

Printed leggings, your specification

Made to your tech pack, fabric and colours by a factory matched to the order.

Private label

Your main label, care label, hangtag and polybag. Nominated trims accepted.

Printed leggings carry an all over pattern, a placed graphic or a logo on a solid leg. Most are sublimated: the design is printed on paper, then transferred by heat into white polyester elastane. Activewear labels, festival and fashion brands and team suppliers order them. A printed leggings manufacturer in Bangladesh has to manage faults a solid legging never shows: colour turning pale where the knit stretches, ghosted images, and patterns that break at the side seam.

Your artwork goes to two bench factories with the same scale, repeat and colour references, and each quote names its print method and whether panels are engineered or cut from a printed roll. A strike off is approved before the PP sample. Your tech pack and pattern are used for your order only and are not shown to another buyer.

Kinds of printed leggings

Roll sublimation

The fabric is printed full width, then cut. The economical route for small repeats and abstract patterns, where a break at the side seam does not show.

Engineered panel print

Each pattern piece is printed in position, so stripes, borders and large motifs meet at the seams. More artwork work and more fabric waste, at a higher price.

Placement print on a solid leg

A logo or graphic on the thigh or waistband, sublimated on white polyester or heat transferred onto a dyed leg. The transfer must stretch as far as the knit.

Digital print on cotton elastane

Sublimation will not bond to cotton, so cotton blends are printed with reactive dye, which needs steaming and washing, or pigment ink, which can stiffen and crack when stretched.

Artwork for a printed leggings manufacturer in Bangladesh

Artwork as a repeat
A tile that repeats without a visible join, its size marked in centimetres, usually at 150 dpi or more at print size, with layered files for engineered pieces.
Scale on the body
Mark the motif size you want on the wearer. A print stretched over a thigh widens across the leg, so circles turn oval and small motifs read larger.
Colour references
Printed colour standards or an earlier strike off, never screen colours. Sublimation shifts with paper, press heat and fabric, so approve colour on the bulk cloth.
Base fabric
White polyester elastane, usually 80 to 90 percent polyester. A higher polyester share prints brighter; nylon and cotton give weak or no sublimation result.
Match points
Name the seams where the pattern must meet: side seam, inseam, centre back, waistband join. Each one adds engineering work and fabric.
Stretched approval
Ask for the PP sample photographed on a form, stretched at knee and seat, so pale show through on dark areas is seen before bulk.

Tests for printed leggings

ISO 105-X12
Colour fastness to rubbing, dry and wet. Printed thighs rub on each other, on bags and on seats; ask for grades on the darkest colour in the print.
AATCC 61
The US washing fastness method. Ask for it on dark grounds, which can bleed into the white areas of the same print.
REACH Annex XVII, entry 43
For the EU, azo dyes that release listed amines are restricted above 30 mg/kg. Ask for a report on the printed fabric covering inks and base dyes.

What moves the price of printed leggings

  • Print layout: engineered panels cost more than roll printing, in artwork time and wasted fabric.
  • Colourways: each colourway is its own print run, strike off and approval.
  • Base fabric: a higher polyester share and a heavier weight raise the fabric cost.
  • Cotton blends: reactive or pigment digital print adds steps over sublimation on polyester.
  • Match points: every seam where the pattern must meet adds cutting and sewing care.

Lead time for printed leggings

Printed leggings take 7 to 14 days to sample and 30 to 60 days in bulk after PP approval, and 60 to 90 days from order confirmation to shipment is typical. The strike off on bulk fabric adds days before the PP sample, and an engineered print can need a further round if the panels do not meet. Printing on cotton adds the steaming and washing steps. The quote confirms the dates.

What we check on printed leggings before shipment

  • Stretched printKnee and seat are stretched on finished pairs to look for white showing through the colour, a frequent printed legging complaint.
  • Ghosting and press marksPrints are checked for double images, blurred edges and pale creases where the fabric folded in the press.
  • Pattern at the seamsOn engineered styles, side seams, inseams and the waistband join are checked against the approved strike off.
  • Colour against the strike offSampled pieces from each roll are compared with the approved strike off under a light booth.

Questions buyers ask about printed leggings

Can leggings made from cotton be sublimation printed?

No. Sublimation dye bonds to polyester and washes out of cotton. A cotton legging can be printed digitally with reactive dye, which needs steaming and washing, or with pigment ink, which sits on the surface and can crack when stretched. Both cost more and take longer than sublimation.

What file should I send for an all over print?

A seamless repeat tile at print size with the scale marked in centimetres, usually at 150 dpi or more, plus colour references printed on fabric if you have them. For engineered prints, send the artwork laid onto each pattern piece in separate layers.

Why does a printed legging turn pale when it stretches?

Sublimation colours the surface of the fibres. When the knit opens, the paler fibre and elastane underneath show through, which the trade calls grin through. A tighter knit, a higher polyester share and lighter grounds reduce it; it shows most on dark, solid areas.

Will the pattern line up at the seams?

Only on an engineered print, where each panel is printed in position. Roll printed leggings are cut from continuous fabric, so the pattern breaks at the side seam and inseam. For stripes and large motifs, ask for engineered panels and approve the alignment on the strike off.
