Plastisol screen print

Ink that sits on top of the fabric, opaque and bright, cured with heat. Choose it for bold logos on any body colour; it feels heavier than other methods on a light vest.

Discharge print on dark cotton

A paste that removes the dye from a dark cotton body and puts colour in its place, leaving almost no hand. Choose it for chest prints on black or navy cotton vests.

Water based screen print

Ink that soaks into the fibre for a soft hand on light colours. Choose it for pale cotton vests and vintage looks; on dark bodies it shows weakly without an underlay.

Heat transfer print

A printed film pressed onto the panel, suited to small runs, multicolour logos and polyester sports vests. Choose it for names, numbers and many designs in short quantities.

Artwork

Vector files with each colour separated and matched to a colour reference. Photographic art needs a halftone plan agreed before any screen is made.

Print size

Width and height in centimetres, per size if it grades. The chest of a vest narrows toward the armholes, so a print sized for a tee may run into the binding.

Placement

Distance from the high point of the shoulder to the top of the print, and centred between the armholes. Give it per size, or state one placement for all sizes.

Method and ink

Plastisol or water based screen, discharge, or heat transfer. Discharge needs a cotton body dyed with dischargeable dyes; it does not work on polyester.

Strike off

A test print on the bulk dyed fabric for colour and hand, approved before the print run. A strike off on another fabric tells you little about the vest.

Screens across sizes

One screen for every size, or two or three graded screens. One screen costs less but looks small on the largest size.

Tests for printed tank tops

ISO 105-C06

Wash fastness of the printed panel, graded 1 to 5 on the grey scales. Ask for it on the print, including staining of the adjacent fabric, which shows whether print colour bleeds onto the vest.

ISO 105-X12

Colour fastness to rubbing, dry and wet. Pigment and discharge prints can rub off on dark bodies, so ask for a grade taken on the print itself.

ISO 6330

Domestic washing procedures. Ask for printed vests washed through a set number of cycles, then checked for cracking, peeling and fading of the print.

REACH Annex XVII, entry 72

Restricts CMR substances in clothing, formaldehyde at 75 mg/kg among them. Discharge pastes can leave formaldehyde in the print, so ask for a test on EU orders.

Lead time for printed tank tops

Printed vest samples usually run 7 to 14 days, with bulk 30 to 60 days after the PP sample carries written approval. Screens are made once the artwork is final, and a strike off on the bulk fabric adds days before the print run. A print wash test, or a formaldehyde test for the EU, adds laboratory time. The quote confirms each date.
