Sports shorts cover running, gym training and team kit, and the inseam decides which: a short split hem runner, a mid length training short or a longer kit short. Woven ripstop dries fast and stops small tears spreading; polyester knit stretches and feels softer. Running labels, gyms, clubs and schools buy them alongside tops. A sports shorts manufacturer in Bangladesh builds them from a short list of parts, waistband, liner, pockets and hem, and each one belongs in the spec.
Garments Hub BD shows both factories' answers on one sheet, including the waistband, liner and pockets each one priced, so the cheaper offer is not simply the simpler short. The inline inspection during sewing is where crotch seams and waistband joins are looked at, before a fault runs through a whole bundle.
Kinds of sports shorts
Split hem running shorts
A short inseam, usually 3 to 5 inches, with side splits and a curved hem so the stride stays free. Choose them for road and track running; most carry a brief liner and a small key pocket.
Two in one shorts
A woven outer short over a built in compression liner, often with a phone pocket on the liner leg. Choose them for gym and trail use; the liner is a second garment sewn into the same waistband.
Woven training shorts
Polyester ripstop or four way stretch woven at around a 7 inch inseam, with zip side pockets. Choose them for gym and field sessions where pockets carry keys and phones.
Knit training shorts
Polyester interlock or a knit with elastane, soft and quiet on the move, with an elastic waist. Choose them for indoor training and as a lower cost squad short; they snag more easily than ripstop.
Team kit shorts
Plain or sublimated polyester shorts made to match a jersey in colour and artwork, often with a number on the leg. Choose them for club and school kits, where shade matching to the shirt is most of the work.
How to specify sports shorts
- Inseam
- The inseam for each size, measured from the crotch seam to the hem, and whether it grows with size or stays fixed across the run.
- Waistband
- Elastic width, usually 3 to 5 cm, covered or exposed, and the drawcord: inside or outside, flat or round, with tipped ends.
- Liner
- None, a mesh brief liner or a compression liner, with its fabric and its own leg length, given separately from the outer inseam.
- Pockets
- Side seam, zip side, rear zip or a key pocket inside the waistband, with zip type and colour for each one.
- Fabric and finish
- Woven ripstop, stretch woven or knit, with fibre content and weight, and a water repellent finish if the shorts are sold for wet weather running.
- Hem and reflective
- Side split depth, a bound or turned hem, and any reflective trim with its size and position.
Tests to ask a sports shorts manufacturer in Bangladesh for
- ISO 13935
- The crotch seam carries the main load on a pair of shorts in squats and sprints, so ask for seam strength there and along the inside leg.
- ISO 13936
- Slippery woven polyester can pull away from the stitching at the crotch and back rise; this seam slippage test shows whether it will.
- ISO 13937
- Ripstop is chosen to stop a tear spreading, and the tear strength result on the woven cloth shows whether it actually does.
- ISO 4920
- The spray test for water repellency, graded 1 to 5; AATCC 22 is the US method for the same test, graded 0 to 100. Ask for it on woven running shorts sold with a shower resistant finish.
What moves the price of sports shorts
- Liner: a brief liner adds a piece and a seam; a compression liner adds a second garment.
- Fabric: four way stretch woven costs more than plain ripstop or knit interlock.
- Pockets: each zip pocket brings a zip, facings and several operations.
- Waistband build: covered elastic with an inner drawcord takes more work than an exposed band.
- Reflective trims and kit sublimation: both add a per piece cost and a process.
Lead time for sports shorts
Running and training shorts usually sample within 7 to 14 days. Stretch woven cloth made to order, a water repellent finish or reflective trims each add days before cutting. Sports shorts bulk runs 30 to 60 days once the PP sample is signed. For kit shorts that must match a jersey, the shade approval for both fabrics comes first, and the quote confirms every date.
What we check on sports shorts before shipment
- Crotch seamThe crotch join is checked for even stitching and pulled to see it holds without cracked stitches or slipping yarns.
- Waistband recoveryThe waistband is stretched to full width and released to check the elastic recovers and the drawcord exits are reinforced.
- Liner attachmentLiners are checked for even attachment at the waist, no twist, and a liner leg that stays above the outer hem.
- Inseam by sizeInseam and leg opening are measured on each size in the sample, since a short cut long or short is obvious to the wearer.
Questions buyers ask about sports shorts
Which inseam should running shorts have?
Racing and road shorts usually sit at 3 to 5 inches, training shorts around 7 inches, and longer kit or court shorts at 9 inches or more. Choose by use and market, and say in the spec whether the inseam grades with size.
Woven or knit for team kit shorts?
Woven polyester is lighter, dries faster and shrugs off snags on grass and courts. Knit feels softer and stretches more but pulls more easily. Plenty of teams wear woven shorts for matches and knit shorts for training. Say which sport and surface the shorts are for, and both quotes will propose a fabric to suit.
Do running shorts need a liner?
Most running shorts carry a mesh brief liner so they can be worn without underwear, and two in one shorts use a compression liner instead. If your customers wear their own base layers, an unlined short is lighter and costs less.
Can shorts match a jersey made in a different fabric?
Yes, by approving lab dips of both fabrics together under the same light. Woven shorts and knit jerseys take dye differently, so expect a close match rather than an identical one, and set a tolerance you will accept. Approve the pair in daylight or a light booth, not under shop lighting.
