A women's trench coat is cut on a women's block, with bust shaping, a defined waist and a belt that sits higher than on a men's coat. Fashion and workwear ranges sell it belted over dresses and tailoring, in stone, black and navy. A women's trench coat manufacturer in Bangladesh needs the women's size chart, the belt position and the fit form named up front, because the coat is judged on how it shapes at the waist.
Brands selling a trench to both men and women often hope to grade one pattern into the other. Plan for two pattern sets and two rounds of fit sampling instead, and say so on the enquiry so both factories quote the second block. Your pattern and tech pack are used for your order only, which matters when a fitted block is the asset.
Kinds of women's trench coat
Classic belted women's trench
Double breasted and knee length, shaped by princess seams or darts, with a belt at the natural waist. The core style of a women's trench range.
Single breasted fitted trench
One button row, a slimmer body and a narrower lapel, usually without a gun flap. Lighter looking and suited to office wear.
Oversized women's trench
A dropped shoulder and a wide body, with the belt doing all the shaping. Easier to fit across sizes, but sleeve and belt length need care so it does not swamp a petite frame.
Petite and long lengths
The same coat in shorter and longer body and sleeve lengths. It adds pattern work and a separate size chart, and reaches customers a standard range misses.
Briefing a women's trench coat manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Sample size and form
- Name the sample size, usually a UK 10 or 12 or a medium, the fit form it is checked on, and a reference coat that fits the way you want.
- Bust and waist shaping
- Bust, waist and hip measurements, and how the shape is made: princess seams, darts or side panels. Princess seams give a clean line in gabardine.
- Belt position
- The belt sits at the natural waist, higher than on a men's coat. Give its height from the high point of the shoulder for the sample size, graded with the body.
- Closure direction
- State which front laps over the other, since women's coats usually fasten right over left, and which shoulder carries the gun flap.
- Shoulder and sleeve
- A narrower shoulder and a slimmer, shorter sleeve. Raglan sleeves forgive shoulder variation; set in sleeves need the shoulder width right on every size.
- Size chart
- A women's chart in centimetres with bust, waist, hip, shoulder, sleeve and back length, and tolerances. Never derive it from a men's chart.
Tests for a women's trench coat
- ISO 13936
- Seam slippage. Princess and waist seams on a fitted coat take strain when the wearer sits or reaches, and a tight gabardine that slips opens there first.
- ISO 105-E04
- Perspiration fastness. A fitted coat sits close at the underarm, and pale stone or blush shades show a perspiration mark or dye change quickly.
- REACH Annex XVII, entry 72
- Includes formaldehyde, held to 75 mg/kg in clothing. Easy care resin finishes on cotton gabardine can release it, so ask for the test for the EU.
What moves the price of a women's trench coat
- A second pattern set and grade, if the range also sells a men's version.
- Shaping: princess seams and darts add cutting and sewing over a straight men's body.
- Extra fit rounds on a women's form to settle bust, waist and belt line together.
- Length options such as petite and long, each with its own markers.
- Softer, lighter cloths that need more care at sewing and pressing than a firm gabardine.
Lead time for women's trench coats
Fit sampling is where a women's trench takes longer. Plan for more than one fit round on a new block, since bust, waist and belt line move together and each change is rechecked on a women's form. If a men's version runs alongside, the two blocks are sampled separately. The quote shows the sample rounds, and order confirmation to shipment is usually 60 to 90 days.
What we check on women's trench coats before shipment
- Waist positionWaist shaping and belt loops sit at the same height on every size checked against the graded chart.
- Bust shapingPrincess seams or darts are symmetric, pressed flat and end at the same point on both sides.
- Closure directionFronts lap in the specified direction, and buttons, buttonholes and gun flap follow it.
- Hem sweepThe hem hangs evenly over the hips, without flaring at the vent or pulling at the side seams.
Questions buyers ask about women's trench coats
Can I grade a men's trench into a women's one?
Not well. A women's coat needs bust shaping, a narrower shoulder, a higher waist and a different belt line, and grading a men's block gives a boxy coat that pulls at the bust. Draft a women's block, sample it on a women's form, and budget for the second pattern set and its samples.
Where should the belt sit on a women's trench coat?
At the natural waist, usually a few centimetres higher than on a men's coat of similar height. Grade it with the body so it does not drift on the largest and smallest sizes. Mark the belt loop height on the size chart and check it on the fit sample with the coat closed.
Do women's trench coats fasten the other way?
Usually yes: the right front laps over the left, the reverse of a men's coat. The gun flap may move shoulders as well. Put the direction in the tech pack, because it changes the pattern, the buttonhole side and how the storm flap is cut.
What sizes should a women's trench range cover?
A standard range often runs five or six sizes, and some brands add petite and long lengths. Each length needs its own pattern adjustments and markers. Starting with the standard length and adding petite once it sells keeps the first order simple.
