Zip-up sweaters, your specification

Made to your tech pack, fabric and colours by a factory matched to the order.

Private label

Your main label, care label, hangtag and polybag. Nominated trims accepted.

Zip-up sweaters cover full zip knitted jackets and cardigans, and quarter and half zip pullovers with stand or mock collars. Menswear, golf and outdoor brands and corporate uniform buyers order them as smart casual layers; zipper sweaters are the same product under another name. For a zip-up sweater manufacturer in Bangladesh the knitting is routine. The zip is where the work, and most of the faults, sit.

Garments Hub BD asks both factories to quote the same zip type, length and tape colour, since a metal zip or a dyed to match tape changes the price and the trim lead time. The zip is checked on every size at fit sample for lying flat, and inline inspection watches zip setting, where ripples start. Photographs of the zip area reach you at each stage.

Kinds of zip-up sweater

Full zip with stand collar

A knitted jacket or cardigan with an open ended zip from hem to collar. The collar stands when zipped and folds flat when open; a zip garage at the top keeps the slider off the chin.

Quarter zip pullover

A short zip at the neck, usually 18 to 25 cm, with a mock neck or stand collar. The classic golf and office layer; one zip length often serves every size.

Half zip pullover

A longer zip, usually 25 to 35 cm, opening to mid chest, often with a funnel collar. More ventilation and a sportier look than the quarter zip.

Two way full zip

A separating zip with two sliders, so a longline knit can open from the hem when seated. More trim cost, and both sliders need checking.

How to specify a zip-up sweater

Zip type and size
Nylon coil, usually size 3 or 5, is light and flexible; metal size 5 is heavier and stiffer; moulded plastic teeth sit between. Say open ended or closed end.
Zip length by size
Full zips are graded with the body, usually by 1 to 2 cm per size. Quarter and half zips may run one length; state which.
Edge stabilising
Ask for a woven tape or facing behind the knitted edge where the zip is set. It stops the knit stretching as it feeds under the needle.
Tape and puller colour
Match the tape to the yarn shade or choose a contrast. Dyed to match tapes take longer and may carry a minimum; stock colours are faster.
Collar build
Stand, mock or funnel collar, single or double layer, with height per size. A double layer collar hides the zip ends and lies neater.
Top and bottom finish
A zip garage or chin guard at the top and a clean bottom stop. On full zips, ask for a locking slider so the zip stays closed.

Tests for zip-up sweaters

ISO 5077 with ISO 6330
Dimensional change in washing. A knit that shrinks while the zip tape does not makes the front ripple, so test the finished sweater with its zip.
ISO 105-C06
Wash fastness with staining. A dark zip tape can mark a pale knit along the front edge, so ask for staining results on the tape itself.
REACH Annex XVII
Entry 27 limits nickel release from metal parts in direct and prolonged skin contact. Metal zips and sliders sitting at the neck need nickel testing for the EU.
US CPSIA
Children's zip-ups sold in the US need metal zips and slider coatings tested for lead at a CPSC accepted laboratory: at most 100 ppm in the metal and 90 ppm in coatings.

What moves the price at a zip-up sweater manufacturer in Bangladesh

  • Metal zips cost more than nylon coil, and two way separating zips more than either.
  • Dyed to match tapes and custom pullers add trim cost and minimums.
  • Graded zip lengths mean more trim lines to buy and track than one length.
  • Stabilising tape or a facing adds an operation along each zip edge.
  • Double layer collars and zip garages add knitting, linking and sewing time.

Lead time for zip-up sweaters

Zips are usually ordered once the colour is approved, and dyed to match tapes add days to the trim lead time. A first zip-up style often needs an extra fit round to settle the zip length and stop rippling. Knitting takes as long as a plain sweater of the same gauge; zip setting adds sewing after linking. The quote shows the trim arrival date beside the knitting plan.

What we check on zip-up sweaters before shipment

  • Front lying flatHeld by the shoulders, the zipped front must hang flat with no waves along the tape, and both fronts must be the same length.
  • Zip runs and locksEach zip is run end to end several times and checked for smooth travel, locking and secure stops.
  • Stripe and hem matchStripes, ribs and the hem must meet level across the closed zip.
  • Garage and chin finishThe zip top is checked for a garage or guard covering the slider and no sharp edge against the neck.

Questions buyers ask about zip-up sweaters

Metal or nylon zip on a knitted sweater?

Nylon coil is the usual choice: light, flexible and kind to a soft knit. Metal looks heavier and more rugged and suits chunky and outdoor styles, but its weight can pull a fine knit out of shape. Metal zips sold into the EU need nickel testing.

Why does the front of a zip sweater ripple?

The knit stretches as it is fed under the needle while the tape does not, or the knit shrinks in washing and the tape does not. A stabilising tape behind the edge, careful feeding and a wash test on the finished garment stop it. Judge a washed sample, not a pressed one.

Should zip length be graded by size?

On a full zip, yes: the zip must match the front length, so it usually grows by 1 to 2 cm per size. On quarter and half zips many brands use one length for all sizes to keep trims simple, at the cost of a slightly deeper opening on small sizes.

Can the zip tape match my yarn colour?

Yes. Dyed to match tapes are standard, though they add days and sometimes a minimum per shade; stock colours are faster and cheaper. Approve the tape against the yarn lab dip under the same light, since tape and yarn take dye differently.
