Aprons, your specification

An apron is a flat garment with few sizes, so its quality sits in the details: strap hardware, how pockets are divided and tacked, and how the cloth stands up to washing, oil and wear. Restaurant groups, coffee chains, retailers, hairdressers and promotional buyers order it in canvas, poly cotton or waxed cotton. An apron manufacturer in Bangladesh often sews it on a uniform line beside chef coats, so kitchen and front of house can be ordered together. Denim aprons have their own page.

Garments Hub BD sends the apron drawing, cloth and hardware list to two factories that sew woven uniforms, so both quotes price the same straps, pockets and logo. Where aprons go with chef coats, both are quoted on one enquiry, and inline inspection checks strap joins and pocket tacks while the line runs.

Kinds of apron

Canvas bib apron

Cotton canvas, usually 280 to 400 GSM, covering chest to knee with an adjustable neck strap and long waist ties. Stiff when new and softer with washing; the usual choice for coffee bars, bakeries and workshops.

Poly cotton kitchen apron

Poly cotton twill, often 65/35, in white, black or house colours, made to go through hot contract laundry with the chef coats. Lighter than canvas, quick to dry and steadier in size.

Waxed cotton apron

Cotton canvas coated with a wax finish that sheds water and wipes clean, often with leather or webbing straps. Used by barbers, florists and craft workshops, and spot cleaned or re waxed rather than machine washed.

Waist and bistro apron

A half apron tied at the waist: short with a row of pockets for floor staff, or long to the ankle for a bistro look. A long bistro apron needs a wide cloth or a joined panel.

Tabard

Front and back panels joined at the shoulders and pulled on over the head, closed at the sides by ties or press studs. Worn by retail, cleaning and care staff, usually in poly cotton with a logo.

Promotional printed apron

A lighter polyester or poly cotton apron, usually a one size bib with simple ties, screen or transfer printed with a brand for events, store promotions and gifts. Price and print colours lead the order.

How to specify an apron

Body and cloth
Body length and width, bib width, cloth and weight. Canvas usually runs 280 to 400 GSM and poly cotton twill around 200 to 240 GSM.
Strap hardware
How the neck strap adjusts: through two metal eyelets in the bib with a slider, or a buckle on a webbing strap. Eyelets in canvas need a reinforcing layer behind them, and on waxed cotton a leather strap is riveted, not sewn.
Ties
Tie length to wrap round and knot at the front, which is longer than it looks on paper, and tape width. Folded self fabric ties or cotton tape.
Pocket layout
A divided front pocket drawn with each section's width, since the divisions decide what it holds: an order pad, a thermometer, a cloth. Add a towel loop at the hip for bar staff, and keep pockets off a bib that gets wiped down.
Logo
Screen print, transfer or embroidery, with size and position on the bib. On waxed canvas, embroidery or a woven badge holds better than print, which struggles on wax.
Set colour
If aprons go with chef coats, give one colour standard for both and approve the apron cloth's lab dip against it.

Tests for an apron manufacturer in Bangladesh to run

ISO 105-X12
Rubbing fastness. Black canvas and waxed finishes can rub off onto shirts and chef whites, so ask for dry and wet rubbing grades on the bulk cloth.
ISO 13935
Seam strength, where straps and ties join the body. That joint takes every pull the apron gets, so test the strap seam and not only the cloth.
ISO 5077 with ISO 6330
Dimensional change in washing. Cotton canvas can shrink noticeably unless pre shrunk, so set a limit before the pattern is final and measure the ties as well.

What moves the price of an apron

  • Cloth: waxed cotton and heavy canvas cost more than poly cotton twill.
  • Strap hardware: eyelets, sliders, D-rings and cross back straps against plain ties.
  • Pockets: each division, pen slot and bar tack adds sewing time.
  • Logo method: embroidery stitch count, print colours, or a woven or leather badge.
  • Leather or webbing straps on waxed aprons, sourced and fixed as separate parts.

Lead time for aprons

A first apron sample usually takes 7 to 14 days, and a repeat style less. Bulk usually runs 30 to 60 days after written PP approval, and aprons often sit at the short end of that range, being flat and quick to sew. Waxing, cloth dyed to match chef coats, nominated hardware or embroidery each add days, and the quote confirms the dates.

What we check on aprons before shipment

  • Strap joinsNeck strap and tie joins pulled by hand on sampled aprons, checking the bar tacks and the reinforcement behind each eyelet.
  • Pocket divisionsDivided pocket widths measured against the drawing and the division seams checked for straightness, since a section a few millimetres short no longer takes what it was drawn for.
  • Logo positionLogo measured from the bib top and centre line; on a one size apron a crooked logo shows on every wearer.
  • Wax evennessWaxed aprons checked for bare patches, streaks and tackiness, with a white cloth rubbed on to catch transfer.

Questions buyers ask about aprons

Canvas or poly cotton for a kitchen apron?

Poly cotton if the aprons go to a contract laundry with chef coats: it washes hot, dries fast and holds its size. Cotton canvas if they are washed on site and must look sturdy at a counter; it wears in well but shrinks unless pre shrunk.

Can a waxed apron go in the washing machine?

No. Hot water and detergent strip the wax and leave the canvas patchy. Waxed aprons are wiped down and re waxed when they stop shedding water, and the care label should say so. For aprons that must be laundered, choose canvas or poly cotton.

Can aprons match our chef coats?

Yes. Quote them on one enquiry, give one colour standard and approve each cloth's lab dip against it. A white poly cotton apron ages at the same rate as white poly cotton chef coats in the same laundry, so the set stays matched longer.

What is a tabard, and who wears one?

A tabard is a sleeveless over garment with front and back panels joined at the shoulders and closed at the sides. Retail, cleaning, care and catering staff wear it because it covers back and front and goes on in seconds over a uniform.
