Moulded cup encapsulation bras

Each breast sits in its own moulded foam cup, held in a frame with power mesh behind it. Sold for medium to high support, with a natural shape, usually sized by band and cup, which multiplies the size grid.

Removable pad bras

A double layer front with openings for thin foam pads that add shape and come out for washing. The openings must be placed so the pads do not shift or fold.

High support running bras

Moulded cups, a deep underband, padded adjustable straps and often a hook and eye back. It carries more trims than any other style here and is sold for running and court sports.

Racerback and crossback bras

Back styles rather than support levels: straps meet between the shoulder blades or cross over, so they stay put when the arms move. Common on low and medium support bras worn under open tanks.

How to specify a sports bra

Support level and sport

Name low, medium or high and the activity. Fabric power, band depth and cup build follow from it, so quotes on different levels describe different bras.

Main fabric and lining

Nylon or polyester elastane, warp or circular knit, typically 200 to 260 GSM, with a power mesh lining across the front. Nylon feels cooler; polyester takes sublimation print.

Underband elastic

Width, usually 25 to 50 mm, its tension at a stated stretch, and whether it is enclosed, exposed with a logo or bonded. The band does most of the support work.

Edges: sewn or bonded

Coverstitched elastic at the neckline and armholes, or bonded tape with laser cut edges for a flat finish, whose adhesive must survive repeated washing.

Cups and pads

Moulded cup depth and foam thickness per size, or pad size and pocket position. Pads cut per size band sit better than one pad for the whole run.

Straps, back and size system

Fixed or adjustable straps, slider material and the back style. Then S to XL alpha sizing, or band and cup sizing such as 32B to 38DD, which adds sizes and fit samples.

• Band and cup sizing multiplies sizes, fit samples and cutting lays against an S to XL run.

Lead time for sports bras

Moulded cups are pressed from foam in moulds made for each cup shape and size, so a new cup adds time before the first sample; a stock mould does not. Logo underbands and custom elastics are knitted to order and add days, and bonded styles need an adhesive wash test before bulk. In a kit, the bra tends to finish last, and the quote dates it separately.
