Overshirts, your specification

Made to your tech pack, fabric and colours by a factory matched to the order.

Private label

Your main label, care label, hangtag and polybag. Nominated trims accepted.

An overshirt is a shirt cut as a light jacket: heavier cloth, a boxy body and a straight hem, worn open over a tee or a hoodie. Brands use it for spring and autumn layering, workwear inspired ranges, and as a step into outerwear without a coat's cost. An overshirt manufacturer in Bangladesh sews it on a shirt line set up for jacket weight cloth, with heavier needles and thread and a snap setting press.

Garments Hub BD asks two factories on its bench to quote the same cloth, lining and trim list, so you can see whether the quilted version or the snaps move the price. The fit sample can be judged over the layer it will be worn on. Snap setting and pocket flaps are photographed at inline inspection, and those photographs are yours.

Kinds of overshirt

Moleskin overshirt

Dense cotton with a sheared, suede like face, usually at the heavy end of the range. Warm and wind resistant for a cloth shirt, and marks show on it from rough handling.

Canvas overshirt

Plain woven cotton with a hard face, workwear inspired, often with triple stitching and snaps. It softens and fades with wear and takes a garment dye well.

Wool blend overshirt

Wool with polyester or nylon, usually in a check. Warmer than cotton and softer to wear over a tee, and the one that needs fibre labelling and a pilling check.

Corduroy overshirt

A cut pile in vertical wales, usually 8 to 14 wale for overshirts. The pile has a direction, so every panel is laid and cut the same way.

Quilted lined overshirt

Any of the above with a quilted polyester lining in the body and sleeves. Takes the overshirt into autumn and colder days, and moves it towards jacket pricing.

How to specify an overshirt

Cloth and weight
Give cloth type and GSM. At 200 to 280 GSM the cloth decides how the body stands away from the wearer, so approve a swatch before the proto.
Pockets
Patch chest pockets with flaps, side entry hand pockets and any inside pocket. Pocket bags in a lighter cotton keep weight and bulk down.
Closures
Metal snaps by type and finish, or buttons usually 20 to 24 ligne against 16 to 18 on a shirt. Larger buttons need longer buttonholes and firmer facings.
Lining
Unlined, yoke lined, or a quilted lining in body and sleeves, with wadding weight given, typically 60 to 100 GSM.
Block
Boxy, with a dropped shoulder and room to layer. Give chest ease over the garment it is worn on, and a straight hem length for wearing open.
Seams
Flat felled or double needle seams on canvas and moleskin, and bound seam allowances on unlined styles so the inside looks finished when worn open.

Tests and labelling for overshirts

ISO 13935
Seam strength. Heavy cloth loads the seams at armholes and pocket corners, so test seams cut from bulk cloth with the stitch and thread in the spec.
Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011 and the Wool Products Labeling Act
Fibre names in the EU and wool content in the US. A wool blend overshirt is labelled by exact fibre percentages, so get the composition confirmed by the mill.
REACH Annex XVII, entry 27
Nickel release from metal parts in direct and prolonged contact with skin, limited to 0.5 micrograms per square centimetre per week in the EU. Ask for compliant snaps.

Why an overshirt manufacturer in Bangladesh prices it like a jacket

  • Cloth: moleskin, canvas or wool blend costs more per metre than shirting, and a boxy body uses more of it.
  • Pockets: flapped chest pockets and side entry hand pockets add pieces, bags and operations.
  • Metal snaps or large buttons, plus the reinforced facings behind them.
  • A quilted lining, which adds wadding, lining cloth and a quilting step.
  • Slower sewing on heavy cloth, with heavier needles and more bar tacks.

Lead time for overshirts

Proto and fit samples usually take 7 to 14 days, longer if the cloth is woven or dyed to order. Bulk overshirts usually run 30 to 60 days after written PP approval. A quilted lining adds a quilting step, garment dyeing adds days at the end, and nominated snaps can take longer to arrive than the cloth. The quote dates each version separately.

What we check on overshirts before shipment

  • Cross seamsWhere four layers meet at the armhole and side seam, stitches are checked for skips and needle damage, both common on heavy cloth.
  • Pocket flapsFlaps cover the pocket mouth, sit level left and right, and the pocket corners are bar tacked.
  • Lining hangOn quilted versions the lining sits inside the hem without pulling the outer, and quilting lines run level across the back.
  • Front edgesThe straight hem hangs level when the overshirt is worn open, with both front edges the same length.

Questions buyers ask about overshirts

Why does an overshirt cost more than a shirt?

It uses heavier cloth and more of it, carries flapped pockets, snaps or large buttons with reinforced facings, and sews slower on heavier needles. A quilted version adds lining and wadding. Its price sits closer to a light jacket than to a shirt.

Should an overshirt be graded like a shirt or a jacket?

Like a jacket for chest ease, since it is worn over other layers, and in alpha sizes rather than collar sizes. Keep the sleeve long enough to cover a shirt cuff, and check the fit sample over a hoodie if that is how it will be sold.

Can an overshirt carry a quilted lining for autumn?

Yes. A quilted lining in the body and sleeves, usually with 60 to 100 GSM wadding, turns it into a light jacket. Quote it as a second version beside the unlined one, since it adds a step, wadding and lining cloth.

What wool content should a wool blend overshirt have?

There is no fixed rule. More wool gives warmth and a drier hand; more polyester or nylon gives strength and a lower price. The label has to state the exact fibre percentages for the EU and US, so take them from the mill's composition report.
