Swim shorts are the volume swimwear item: a woven polyester short with an elastic or fixed waist, a mesh brief liner and a print or a solid colour. Board shorts are the longer, unlined version with a fixed waist and a lace up fly. Beachwear brands, resorts, sports retailers and swim schools buy both. A swim shorts and swimwear manufacturer in Bangladesh is usually a woven bottoms or sportswear plant.

Garments Hub BD sends swim shorts to two plants on its bench that sew woven polyester shorts and liners, and asks both to price the same shell, liner and print. Knit swimsuits are stated plainly: a quote only where a knit plant already runs nylon or polyester elastane swim cloth, and otherwise a straight no.

Kinds of swim shorts and swimwear

Elastic waist swim shorts

A full elastic waist with an inner drawcord, a mesh brief liner, side pockets and a back pocket with a drain eyelet. The volume style, sized S to XXL.

Board shorts

A fixed waistband with a lace up or hook and loop fly, no liner and a longer leg, usually around 18 to 21 inches of outseam. Often in stretch woven polyester for surfing and paddling.

Tailored swim shorts

A flat front with a button and zip fly, side adjusters and a shorter leg, cut like a chino short in quick dry polyester, for resort ranges worn from beach to terrace.

Kids swim shorts

Elastic only waists with no drawcord for young children, a soft mesh liner and plastic trims in place of metal. Sized by age and height.

Knit swimsuits and swim briefs

Nylon or polyester elastane, lined, with swim elastic at the edges. Made only where a knit plant already runs this cloth, usually imported, so its minimums and dates follow the cloth.

How to specify swim shorts

Shell fabric
Woven polyester or recycled polyester, peached or smooth, with or without stretch, and the weight. Drying speed depends on weave and finish, so name the drying claim you want.
Liner
Mesh brief liner, a compression liner or none, with the mesh type and edge finish. Fine, soft mesh avoids chafing, and the liner elastic must suit pool and sea use.
Waist
Full elastic with an inner drawcord, or a fixed band with fly and adjusters. Give the elastic width and relaxed and stretched waist per size.
Pockets and drainage
Side and back pockets in mesh or with drain eyelets so water runs out, and a zipped or hook and loop back pocket for keys.
Print
Sublimation for all over prints on white polyester, or placement prints on dyed shells, with a strike off on the bulk cloth before the PP sample.
Chlorine and sea water
If the shorts are sold for pools or the sea, state the colour fastness grades you require after chlorinated and salt water, and ask the laboratory which method it runs.
UPF
Only if the hangtag will claim it: name the market and the test, and test each printed colourway.

Tests a swim shorts and swimwear manufacturer in Bangladesh can be asked for

AS/NZS 4399
The Australian and New Zealand standard that both tests and classifies UPF. Ask for it only where the label will carry a UPF, on each colour and print.
EN 13758-1 and EN 13758-2
EN 13758-1 is the EU method for testing UV protection and EN 13758-2 the classification. Swim shorts may show the EU UV mark from UPF 40 upwards, on tested colours only.
ISO 105-B02
Colour fastness to light, read on the 1 to 8 blue wool scale. Swim shorts spend whole days in strong sun, and bright prints fade first.
ISO 13936
Seam slippage in woven fabric. Smooth polyester shells can pull open beside the seat and crotch seams when wet and stretched, so test those seams.
EN 14682
The EU standard on children's cords and drawstrings. A waist cord on kids swim shorts falls within it, while an elastic only waist avoids the question.

What moves the price of swim shorts

  • Shell: stretch woven and recycled polyester cost more than plain polyester.
  • Liner: a compression liner costs more than a mesh brief, which costs more than none.
  • Print: all over sublimation adds paper and pressing; placement prints add screens per colour.
  • Tailored details such as a zip fly, side adjusters and welt pockets.
  • Tests behind UPF, chlorine and colour claims, per colourway.

Lead time for swim shorts and swimwear

Swim shorts in stock polyester and a solid colour are a quick make. Sublimated and printed shells need artwork per size, a strike off and pressing before cutting, and recycled or stretch shells are often woven to order. UPF and chlorine reports add laboratory days. Knit swimsuits wait on imported cloth, which sets their dates. Swimwear sells to a fixed season, and the quote shows each step.

What we check on swim shorts and swimwear before shipment

  • Liner attachmentMesh liners checked for even attachment at the waist, soft bound leg edges and no twist inside the leg.
  • DrainagePocket mesh and drain eyelets checked open and clear, so pockets empty when the wearer leaves the water.
  • Print at seamsSublimated prints checked for pattern alignment at side seams and pockets, and for white creases from the paper.
  • Kids waist and trimsKids sizes checked for an elastic only waist with no cord or loops, and plastic trims where metal was ruled out.

Questions buyers ask about swim shorts and swimwear

Can a factory in Bangladesh make knit swimsuits?

Some can, where a knit plant already runs nylon or polyester elastane swim cloth, usually imported for the order, so the cloth sets the minimum and the timeline. Woven swim shorts are the common work here. For fitted swimsuits, expect a plain answer on whether a plant can take the order.

How do I get chlorine resistance on swim shorts?

Write it into the specification: the cloth, and the colour fastness grade you accept after chlorinated water, plus sea water if the shorts are for the beach. The laboratory names its method and grades the bulk fabric. Chlorine weakens elastane over time, one reason most swim shorts are plain polyester, but only the test result supports a claim.

Do swim shorts need a liner?

Most elastic waist swim shorts carry a mesh brief liner so they can be worn alone. Board shorts usually have none and fit closer. A compression liner suits sports swim shorts. Choose by use, and give the liner its own measurements.

Can swim shorts be made in recycled polyester?

Yes. Recycled polyester shells are documented under RCS, from 5 percent recycled content, or GRS, from 20 percent with social, environmental and chemical criteria; both are being replaced by the Materials Matter Standard, so check that the certificate is current. The shell is usually woven to order, which moves the cloth date, and the print and liner are specified as for plain polyester.
